How it is calculated
The tool measures how much underlying stock an options position controls, not what you paid for it. It multiplies three inputs: the underlying price per share, the number of contracts and the multiplier (shares per contract). The steps are per contract = price × multiplier and notional = per contract × contracts. It also shows the total number of shares, multiplier × contracts. Amounts are shown in US dollars with two decimals. The multiplier must be above zero, the price and contract count cannot be negative, and contracts must be a whole number; otherwise no result is shown. The usual multiplier for standard equity options is 100, but adjusted or non-standard contracts can differ, so check your contract specification. Strike price and premium do not enter the formula.
Worked example
A trader holds 3 contracts on a stock trading at 187.5, with the standard multiplier of 100. One contract covers 187.5 × 100 = $18,750.00 of stock. Three contracts cover 3 × 18,750 = $56,250.00, which is the notional value shown. The total share count is 100 × 3 = 300 shares. Whatever premium was paid for these options, the exposure to price moves is that of 300 shares.
Common mistakes
- Typing the option premium or strike price in the price box. The field needs the current price of the underlying share; premium and strike do not belong in this formula.
- Leaving the multiplier at 100 for a contract that has a different size, such as an adjusted contract after a corporate action or an index option with its own multiplier.
- Treating notional value as the amount you can lose. For a bought option the most you can lose is the premium; notional only tells how much stock the position moves like.
- Entering the number of shares instead of the number of contracts. 300 shares is 3 contracts at a multiplier of 100, and typing 300 in the contracts box would give a hundred times too much.
- Entering a negative number to represent a short position. Negative contracts or prices give no result, so enter positive values and interpret the long or short direction yourself.

About this calculator
The notional value of an options position is the total value of the underlying shares the contract controls, calculated as Notional = Underlying Price × Number of Contracts × Contract Multiplier. For standard U.S. equity options the multiplier is 100 shares per contract, so a single call on a $150 stock has a notional exposure of $15,000 even though the premium paid might only be a few hundred dollars — this leverage is exactly what makes options both attractive and risky.
Options traders, risk managers and brokerage margin desks use notional value rather than premium paid to size positions relative to account equity, set portfolio-level exposure limits, and calculate margin requirements under rules like FINRA's or the CBOE's. It's also the figure used when comparing an options position's market exposure to an equivalent stock or futures position, since premium alone dramatically understates how much underlying value is actually at stake.
