This converter maps a shoe size across the three main sizing systems — EU (Paris point), US and UK — separately for men's and women's sizing, since the same numeric size means a different actual foot length depending on the system and gender convention used. EU sizes come from the Paris point, where each size step is two-thirds of a centimetre of last length — the inside of the shoe, which runs longer than the foot — while US and UK sizes follow older, less standardized scales whose men's and women's charts diverge for the same foot — the women's number runs higher, by two sizes in the US and by one in the UK.

It's used mainly when buying shoes from a foreign retailer or a foreign brand's website, where the listed size isn't in the system you're used to, and when comparing sizes across brands that print different scales on the box. Because actual fit still varies by manufacturer and shoe last, the conversion is an approximate but reliable starting point rather than a guarantee.
