Daily Fat Intake Calculator
Find your daily fat target.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool turns a calorie target and a fat share into grams: grams of fat = calories × (percent ÷ 100) ÷ 9. Calories is your daily energy target in kcal, and percent is the share of those calories you want from fat. The divisor 9 is the energy in one gram of fat (about 9 kcal), compared with about 4 kcal per gram for protein and carbohydrate. The answer is rounded to a whole number of grams.
Calories must not be negative. If the percent field is empty or negative, the tool silently uses 30%, so check the number you meant. Percent values above 100 are not rejected, so keep them realistic. This is a calculation, not a recommendation: it does not tell you what share of fat is right for you.
Worked example
Daily target: 2,200 kcal, with 35% of calories from fat. Fat calories: 2,200 × 0.35 = 770 kcal. Divide by 9 kcal per gram: 770 ÷ 9 = 85.6, which rounds to 86 g of fat per day. At 30% the same diet would allow 73 g, so each 5 points of fat share is about 12 g on this calorie level.
Common mistakes
- Dividing by 4 instead of 9 because protein and carbs are 4 kcal per gram; fat has more than twice the energy per gram.
- Entering fat grams from a label as the percent, or the daily value percentage as a share of calories. These are different measures.
- Leaving the percent blank and not noticing that the tool then uses 30%.
- Using your maintenance calories when your plan is a deficit or surplus. Enter the calories you actually eat.
- Treating the figure as a minimum or maximum. It is only the grams that match the percentage you chose.
About this calculator
This calculator converts a target fat percentage of total calories into grams, using the fact that fat provides 9 kilocalories per gram (versus 4 for protein and carbs): daily calories × fat percentage ÷ 9.
It's used by people following macro-based diets like keto or low-fat plans who need a concrete gram target rather than just a percentage, dietitians setting client meal plans, and anyone reading a nutrition label who wants to translate a percentage recommendation into an actual daily gram count.
