Stone Veneer Calculator

Enter your wall dimensions, openings, corner length, and waste percentage.

How it is calculated

All measurements are in feet. gross area = length × height and net area = gross - openings, where openings is the total area of doors and windows in square feet. Corner pieces are bought by the linear foot, and the tool assumes each linear foot of corner replaces 0.5 sq ft of flat veneer, so it removes 0.5 × corner length from the flat quantity. Both orders are then increased by the waste allowance: flat = (net - 0.5 × corners) × (1 + waste/100) and corners = corner length × (1 + waste/100). Empty openings and corners count as 0, an empty waste field means 10%, and typing 0 means no waste. The flat figure never drops below zero. Length and height must be above zero, and openings, corners and waste cannot be negative, or there is no result. The 0.5 sq ft per foot is a rule of thumb; check the coverage printed on your product.

Worked example

A wall is 24 ft long and 9 ft high, with 40 sq ft of doors and windows, 18 linear ft of outside corners and 10% waste. Step 1: gross area = 24 × 9 = 216 sq ft. Step 2: net area = 216 - 40 = 176 sq ft. Step 3: corners cover 18 × 0.5 = 9 sq ft, leaving 167 sq ft of flat veneer. Step 4: with waste, 167 × 1.10 gives 183.70 sq ft to order. The corner pieces come to 18 × 1.10 = 19.80 linear ft.

Common mistakes

  • Entering metres or square metres. Every field is in feet or square feet, so convert first.
  • Entering window width instead of window area in the openings field. Openings are in square feet: a 3 ft by 4 ft window counts as 12.
  • Entering the number of corners instead of their length. The field wants total linear feet, so four 9-ft corners are 36.
  • Expecting the flat total to equal wall area minus openings. The tool also takes the corner coverage off, so the flat figure is lower than net area plus waste.
  • Setting waste to 0 for a pattern with many cuts. If you leave the field empty the tool applies 10%, but typing 0 removes any allowance.

About this calculator

Stone veneer is sold and installed in two distinct products with different units: flat panels priced and measured by square footage for wall faces, and corner pieces priced by linear foot for outside corners, since a true corner piece wraps two faces at once and can't be measured in square feet the same way. Total flat coverage is wall area minus door/window openings, and also minus about 0.5 sq ft for every linear foot of corner pieces, because those pieces cover part of the wall face. Total corner length is simply the sum of all outside corner heights — both then padded with a waste allowance (10% if you leave it empty; commonly 5-15%) to cover cuts, breakage, and pattern matching.

This calculator takes your wall dimensions, openings, total corner length, and waste percentage and returns the square footage of flat veneer and linear footage of corner pieces to order. Masons and general contractors use it to generate accurate material orders and quotes before a job, and DIY homeowners use it to avoid under-buying (which risks a mismatched dye-lot on a reorder) or over-buying an expensive material.
