US pints to Litres Converter

Enter a value in us pints to convert it to litres, millilitres.

Result

1.6561 L
1,656.12 mL

How it is calculated

The tool multiplies the number of US liquid pints by a fixed factor: litres = pints × 0.473176473 and millilitres = pints × 473.176473. A US liquid pint is one eighth of a US gallon (231 cubic inches), which is where the factor comes from. Litres are shown with four decimals and millilitres with two. Decimals are accepted, so half a pint is 0.5. The factor is for the US liquid pint only: the UK imperial pint (568.26 mL) is about 20% larger and the US dry pint (used for berries and similar produce) is a different volume again. If a recipe or label comes from the UK, Ireland or Australia you need to check which pint is meant before using this result.

Worked example

An American recipe calls for 3.5 pints of chicken stock. Litres: 3.5 × 0.473176473 = 1.65612 → shown as 1.6561 L. Millilitres: 3.5 × 473.176473 = 1,656.12 mL. So you need about 1.66 litres. For comparison, 3.5 UK pints would be nearly 2 litres (3.5 × 568.26 mL ≈ 1,989 mL), which is why mixing the two causes errors.

Common mistakes

  • Using this for a UK (imperial) pint. A UK pint is 568.26 mL, so a pint of beer in a British pub is about 20% more than the US one converted here.
  • Converting a US dry pint of berries or tomatoes with the liquid factor. Dry and liquid pints are different volumes.
  • Confusing pints with the pound weight rhyme "a pint's a pound". The rule works only roughly for water-like liquids and gives mass, not volume.
  • Reading the litre figure's four decimals as precision of the recipe. Rounding 1.6561 L to 1.65 L or 1.7 L is fine in the kitchen.
  • Mixing up pints and quarts when reading a recipe: two pints make one US quart (0.9464 L) and eight pints make a US gallon (3.7854 L).

About this calculator

The US liquid pint is defined as exactly 1/8 of a US gallon, which works out to 473.176 millilitres (0.473176 litres) — noticeably smaller than the UK imperial pint (568.26 mL), a common source of confusion when reading recipes, beer menus, or product labels from a different country.

Home brewers and bartenders in the US measure beer pours and cocktail recipes in pints, and cooks converting American recipes into metric measurements run into the unit constantly, since US recipe cards routinely call for pints of stock, cream, or berries where the rest of the world would specify litres or millilitres.
