Long Tons to Tonnes Converter

Enter long tons to convert to tonnes and kilograms.

How it is calculated

The tool converts imperial long tons (2,240 lb) into two metric figures with fixed factors: tonnes = LT × 1.0160469 and kg = LT × 1016.0469, where LT is the quantity in long tons. Tonnes are shown with four decimals and kilograms with two. It works in one direction only, from long tons to metric, so to go back divide by 1.0160469. Zero returns zero and a negative value is converted with its sign kept. The input needs a decimal point, not a comma. The metric tonne here is 1,000 kg; it is not the US short ton (2,000 lb), which is a different unit and about 0.9072 tonne.

Worked example

A cargo manifest lists 850 long tons of ore. Tonnes: 850 × 1.0160469 = 863.6399 (rounded to four decimals), shown as 863.6399 t. Kilograms: 850 × 1016.0469 = 863,639.87 kg. So the shipment weighs about 863.6 metric tonnes, roughly 13.6 tonnes more than the same number read as metric tonnes, which is why the unit matters on a contract.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing up the long ton with the US short ton (2,000 lb); a figure labelled just ton may mean either, so check the document before entering it here.
  • Treating long tons and metric tonnes as equal; they differ by about 1.6%, which is more than 13 tonnes on an 850-ton cargo.
  • Typing a comma as the decimal separator (for example 12,5); the tool needs 12.5.
  • Converting a result back by multiplying again; going from metric to long tons needs a division by 1.0160469.
  • Rounding tonnes to one or two decimals before computing kilograms; use the kg figure the tool gives for weights.

About this calculator

The long ton (also called the imperial or gross ton) is the traditional British unit of mass equal to 2,240 pounds, which converts to 1.01605 metric tonnes (1,016.05 kg) — distinct from both the US "short ton" (2,000 lb = 0.90718 t) and the metric tonne itself. The three units differ enough (a long ton is about 12% heavier than a short ton) that mixing them up in a bulk cargo or commodity contract creates a real, costly discrepancy.

The long ton remains standard in UK/Commonwealth shipping, naval architecture (ship displacement is still often quoted in long tons), and international commodity markets for iron ore and other bulk minerals, so traders, freight forwarders, and naval engineers regularly convert it to the metric tonnes used in most modern contracts and customs declarations.
