Crit Damage Multiplier Calculator

Enter base damage, crit chance, and crit multiplier to find your average damage.

How it is calculated

The tool gives the long-run average damage per hit, mixing normal hits and critical hits. average = base × (1 + chance/100 × (mult − 1)). base is the damage of a normal hit, chance is the critical chance in percent (35 means 35%), and mult is the total multiplier of a crit, so 2 means a crit deals double damage. The (mult − 1) part is the extra damage a crit adds. Also shown: effective multiplier = average ÷ base and crit contribution = average − base. Base and mult must be above zero and the chance cannot be negative. The chance is not capped at 100, so a value above 100 simply keeps scaling the result, even though a real game would stop at 100%.

Worked example

A weapon hits for 1,000 base damage with a 35% crit chance and a 2.5x crit multiplier. The extra damage of one crit is 2.5 − 1 = 1.5, so the crit bonus per hit on average is 0.35 × 1.5 = 0.525. Average damage: 1,000 × (1 + 0.525) = 1,525.00. The effective multiplier is 1,525 ÷ 1,000 = 1.525x, and crits add 525.00 damage per hit on average. Individual hits are still either 1,000 or 2,500; the average only appears over many hits.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the crit multiplier as the bonus. If your gear says +150% crit damage, the multiplier is 2.5, not 1.5.
  • Typing the chance as a fraction, such as 0.35, instead of a percent. The tool would read it as 0.35% and show almost no effect.
  • Expecting the average to be the damage you see on any single hit. Hits are either normal or crit; the average only shows up over many hits.
  • Entering a crit chance above 100 because several stats add up. Most games cap crit chance at 100%, but this tool does not, so the result is then too high.
  • Entering a multiplier below 1, which makes crits weaker than normal hits and gives an average below the base.

About this calculator

In RPGs, MOBAs and action games, a character’s critical hit chance and critical damage multiplier combine to determine average output over many hits: average damage = base damage × (1 + crit chance × (crit multiplier − 1)). A build with 30% crit chance and a 2× multiplier, for example, deals 30% more average damage than its base number alone suggests.

This calculator computes that average damage and the effective overall multiplier from your base damage, crit chance and crit multiplier stats. It’s a standard tool for game designers balancing itemization and enemy scaling, and for players optimizing character builds in loot-driven games like action-RPGs, deciding whether to stack more crit chance or more crit damage for the best return.
