52 Week Savings Challenge Calculator

Set your starting deposit and weekly increase to see the challenge total, week by week.

How it is calculated

Deposits form an arithmetic sequence: week 1 is the starting amount and every later week adds the weekly increase. With w weeks, total = w × start + increase × w × (w − 1) ÷ 2. The last deposit is start + increase × (w − 1), and the average deposit is total ÷ w. For a check week c, the same formula with c in place of w gives the amount saved by then; a check week beyond the plan length is cut back to the final week. Weeks and check week are rounded down to whole weeks, and weeks must be at least 1. The number of weeks is an input, so the plan is not fixed at 52. No interest is added.

Worked example

You start with a 5 deposit and add 2 more every week for 52 weeks. Total: 52 × 5 + 2 × (52 × 51 ÷ 2) = 260 + 2,652 = $2,912.00. Last deposit in week 52: 5 + 2 × 51 = $107.00. Average deposit: 2,912 ÷ 52 = $56.00. By week 26 you have saved 26 × 5 + 2 × (26 × 25 ÷ 2) = 130 + 650 = $780.00, which is only about 27% of the total, because the large deposits come late.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting to be half way at week 26. With rising deposits only about a quarter of the total is saved by then, so the savings are back-loaded and the late weeks are the hard part.
  • Entering the weekly increase as the total of all increases. The field is the extra added each week, so 2 means week 2 is 7 and week 3 is 9.
  • Forgetting that a larger start raises every week's deposit. Starting at 20 with an increase of 2 gives a last deposit of 122, much higher than the 107 in this example.
  • Entering a check week above the number of weeks. It is cut back to the last week, so the check result then equals the total.
  • Assuming the plan earns interest. The totals are plain deposits; any interest from the account would come on top.

About this calculator

The 52-week savings challenge is a simple habit-building plan where you increase your deposit by a fixed amount each week for a year — the classic version starts at $1 in week one and adds $1 more each week (week 2 = $2, week 3 = $3...) up to $52 in week 52, totaling $1,378 for the year. The same structure works with any starting amount and weekly increase, so people scale it up (e.g. starting at $5, adding $5 a week) to hit a bigger savings target.

People use it as a beginner-friendly way to build a consistent saving habit without committing to a large lump sum upfront — the early weeks are painless, and by the time deposits get larger later in the year, the habit is already established, which is why it's a popular challenge for holiday funds, emergency savings or a first taste of disciplined saving.

This calculator takes your starting deposit, weekly increase and number of weeks (52 for the classic challenge) and shows the total saved, the final week's deposit and the average weekly deposit. Results describe the single week you pick, not a week-by-week schedule.
