Wei to Ether Converter

Enter a value in wei to convert it to ether, gwei.

Result

2.1000e-5 ETH
2.1000e+4 Gwei

How it is calculated

The tool multiplies the wei amount by fixed powers of ten: ether = wei × 10−18 and gwei = wei × 10−9. Both results are printed in scientific notation with four digits after the decimal point, for example 2.1000e-5 meaning 2.1000 × 10−5, followed by the unit name. The notation is always used, even for ordinary amounts such as 1.5 ether, which appears as 1.5000e+0. Only the first five significant digits are shown, so very long wei values lose their last digits in the display. Negative numbers are accepted and keep their sign, and the tool does not check that the input is a whole number, although real wei amounts always are.

Worked example

Convert 21000000000000 wei. Ether: 21000000000000 × 10−18 = 0.000021, shown as 2.1000e-5 ETH. Gwei: 21000000000000 × 10−9 = 21,000, shown as 2.1000e+4 Gwei. As a check, 1 gwei is a billion wei, so 21 trillion wei is 21 thousand gwei, and ether is a billion times larger than a gwei.

Common mistakes

  • Misreading the exponent. 2.1000e-5 is 0.000021, not 2.1; the minus sign after the e moves the decimal point five places left.
  • Typing the amount with commas or spaces, such as 21,000,000,000,000. Enter digits only, or use a form like 2.1e13.
  • Confusing gwei with ether when quoting a gas price. A gas price of 20 gwei is 0.00000002 ether per unit of gas, not 20 ETH.
  • Expecting every digit of a large wei balance to appear. Only five significant digits are displayed, so the result is for reading, not for exact accounting.
  • Using this tool for the other direction. It converts from wei only; to go from ether to wei multiply by 1018 yourself.

About this calculator

Wei is the smallest, indivisible unit of ether on Ethereum — analogous to a satoshi in Bitcoin — with 1 ether = 10¹⁸ wei defined directly in the protocol, and the intermediate unit gwei (“giga-wei”) = 10⁹ wei sitting exactly halfway between them on the log scale.

Smart-contract and dApp developers work in wei internally because Solidity has no native decimals, but humans read balances in ether and quote gas prices in gwei, so converting between the three is a routine part of building and debugging any Ethereum transaction or gas-fee estimate.
