How it is calculated

The text is lower-cased and every Latin-script letter is examined; spaces, digits, punctuation and symbols are skipped. A letter counts as a vowel if it is a e i o u, the Turkish ı ö ü, or an accented or ligature vowel such as â î û é è ë ï ó ä å æ œ ø. Every other Latin letter is a consonant, including y, ñ, ç, ş, ğ and ß-type letters. letters = vowels + consonants. Turkish capitals are handled correctly: I is read as ı and İ as i. Letters from other scripts, such as Cyrillic or Greek, are ignored entirely: they are neither vowels nor consonants and are not in the letters total. A blank box returns nothing, while text with no Latin letters gives 0, 0 and 0.

Worked example

Enter “Işık İstanbul”. The tool ignores the space and reads I as ı and İ as i. The letters of the first word are ı, ş, ı, k, which is 2 vowels and 2 consonants. The second word gives i, s, t, a, n, b, u, l, which is 3 vowels (i, a, u) and 5 consonants. Adding both words gives 5 vowels and 7 consonants. The tool reports 5 vowels, 7 consonants and 12 letters in total.

Common mistakes

  • Counting y as a vowel. In “rhythm myth” the tool finds 0 vowels and 10 consonants, because y is always treated as a consonant.
  • Pasting text in Cyrillic, Greek or another non-Latin script and expecting counts. Those letters are skipped entirely, so “Привет” gives 0, 0 and 0.
  • Expecting digits, spaces or punctuation to be counted as consonants. They are ignored, so the letters total is not the same as the character count.
  • Treating the result as a phonetic count. The tool sorts letters, not sounds, so a silent e still counts as a vowel and a letter like w or ñ still counts as a consonant.
  • Assuming a vowel-to-consonant ratio is shown. Only the three counts are given, so divide them yourself if you need a ratio.

This tool scans a block of text character by character, sorting each letter into vowels (a, e, i, o, u, plus accented and Turkish vowels such as ı, ö, ü; y counts as a consonant) or consonants, while ignoring spaces, digits, and punctuation, then reports the number of vowels, consonants and letters.
