How it is calculated
Value-based pricing starts from what the customer already has an alternative for and adds a share of the extra value yours delivers. The tool uses premium = differentiation value × capture % ÷ 100, then price = reference value + premium. The reference value is the price of the customer's next-best alternative; the differentiation value is how much more it is worth to them, in the same money and period, for example per year. It also shows the total economic value, TEV = reference value + differentiation value, which is the most a rational customer would pay. Amounts are shown in US dollars. Inputs cannot be negative and the capture share must be between 0 and 100; a share above 100 gives no result, because the price would then exceed TEV.
Worked example
The next-best alternative costs a customer $12,000 a year. Your product creates an extra $8,500 of value a year, and you decide to capture 35% of it. The premium is 8,500 × 35% = $2,975.00 on top of the reference value, so the price is 12,000 + 2,975 = $14,975.00. The total economic value is 12,000 + 8,500 = $20,500.00. The customer keeps the other 65% of the extra value, $5,525, as their reason to switch.
Common mistakes
- Using your own cost as the reference value. The reference is what the customer would pay for the best alternative, not what it costs you to produce.
- Counting value over different periods. If the differentiation value is yearly savings but the reference price is a monthly fee, the sum is meaningless; put both on the same period.
- Capturing 100% of the differentiation value. The customer then gains nothing from switching and has no reason to buy; the tool accepts 100, but most of the value usually has to be left with the customer.
- Typing the share as a fraction. For 35% enter 35, not 0.35, otherwise the premium is almost zero.
- Using a differentiation value you cannot prove. The method is only as good as the value estimate, so base it on the customer's real savings or gains, not on features you like.
About this calculator
Value-based pricing sets a price by starting from the customer’s reference value — usually what they’d pay for the next-best competing alternative — and then adding a portion of the extra economic value your product uniquely delivers on top of that alternative, called the differentiation value. If your product saves a customer $10,000 a year more than the closest competitor, you don’t have to charge the full $10,000 premium; instead you decide what share of that value you want to capture, say 30%, and price accordingly.
This differs sharply from cost-plus pricing, which ignores what the customer is actually willing to pay and can badly underprice a genuinely differentiated product. B2B sales, product marketing and pricing strategy teams use value-based pricing especially for premium or enterprise offerings where the value delivered can be quantified.
