How it is calculated

The tool applies the Turkish 2016 wage (ücret) income tax tariff, which is progressive: each slice of income is taxed only at its own bracket rate. The brackets are 15% up to 12,600, 20% from 12,600 to 30,000, 27% from 30,000 to 110,000 and 35% above that. For each slice: tax = (min(income, upper limit) − lower limit) × rate; the slices are summed to the total tax. Net = income − total tax and effective rate = total tax ÷ income. Enter the annual taxable income in lira. The tool does not deduct social security, allowances, stamp tax or any exemptions, and the non-wage tariff has a different third bracket. Other countries use completely different systems.

Worked example

Annual taxable income 60,000 ₺ (2016 tariff). First slice: 12,600 × 15% = 1,890.00 ₺. Second slice: 17,400 (from 12,600 to 30,000) × 20% = 3,480.00 ₺. Third slice: the remaining 30,000 (from 30,000 to 60,000) × 27% = 8,100.00 ₺. Total tax: 1,890 + 3,480 + 8,100 = 13,470.00 ₺. Net income is 46,530.00 ₺, and the effective rate is 22.45%, well below the 27% top bracket reached.

Common mistakes

  • Believing the whole income is taxed at the highest bracket reached. Only the part above each threshold is taxed at the higher rate.
  • Entering the monthly salary instead of the annual taxable income. The thresholds are annual figures.
  • Entering gross pay and reading the net as take-home pay: social security deductions and other items are not subtracted, so actual take-home is lower.
  • Using the 2016 tariff for a different year. Thresholds and rates change in most years, so choose the matching year's page.

About this calculator

This calculator reproduces Turkey's 2016 progressive income tax brackets to work out how a gross salary or annual income from that year would have been taxed, splitting the income across brackets and showing the resulting tax and net amount.

It's useful for payroll and HR staff reconciling historical payslips, accountants preparing back-dated calculations, and anyone researching how Turkish tax brackets and take-home pay have changed over the past decade. As with the current system, only the portion of income inside each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate.
