Troy ounces to Grams Converter

Enter a value in troy ounces to convert it to grams, avoirdupois ounces.

How it is calculated

The tool multiplies the troy-ounce amount by two fixed factors: grams = ozt × 31.1034768 and avoirdupois oz = ozt × 1.09714, where ozt is the weight in troy ounces. Both results are shown with two decimals, so very small weights lose precision: 1 troy ounce is shown as 31.10 g. The second figure is the ordinary (avoirdupois) ounce used for food and mail, which is lighter than the troy ounce, so the number of ounces comes out higher than the number you typed. Zero returns zero, negative input is converted with its sign, and the decimal separator must be a point.

Worked example

You hold 2.5 troy ounces of silver. Grams: 2.5 × 31.1034768 = 77.7587, shown as 77.76 g. Avoirdupois ounces: 2.5 × 1.09714 = 2.74285, shown as 2.74 oz. The same bar therefore weighs about 77.8 g on a gram scale or 2.74 everyday ounces, which is why a kitchen scale reading in ounces cannot be compared directly with a quoted troy-ounce weight.

Common mistakes

  • Using the everyday ounce (28.35 g) for gold or silver; one troy ounce is about 9.7% heavier, so weights and values come out wrong.
  • Typing a comma as the decimal separator (2,5); enter 2.5, otherwise the tool shows no result.
  • Treating the 2-decimal gram figure as exact for small items; for jewellery under a few grams, the rounding matters, so convert with the factor 31.1034768 yourself.
  • Confusing troy ounces of metal with fluid ounces or with the troy pound (12 troy ounces) when reading a price quote.
  • Forgetting purity: the tool converts weight only, so a figure for 2.5 troy ounces of an alloy is not 2.5 ounces of pure metal.

About this calculator

The troy ounce is the standard unit for weighing precious metals — gold, silver, platinum, palladium — and equals exactly 31.1034768 grams, noticeably heavier than the everyday avoirdupois ounce (28.3495 g) used for food and general goods. The name traces back to the medieval trade fairs of Troyes, France, and its pound has only 12 ounces (the avoirdupois pound has 16); precious metals have been weighed in troy units ever since, which is why gold prices are quoted "per troy ounce."

Bullion dealers, jewelers, mints, and commodities traders rely on the troy-to-gram conversion daily, since international gold and silver spot prices are set in US dollars per troy ounce while most of the rest of the world weighs and prices metal in grams or kilograms.
