Tola to Grams Converter

Enter a value in tola to convert it to grams, ounces.

Result

116.64 g
4.1143 oz

How it is calculated

The conversion is a straight multiplication: grams = tola × 11.6638038 and ounces = tola × 0.411428. The ounce result is the ordinary (avoirdupois) ounce of mass, and is shown with four decimals, while grams are shown with two. Because both results are directly proportional to the tola value, doubling the tola doubles the grams. The tool accepts any number, including fractions such as 0.5 tola or 2.5 tola. It converts weight only; it says nothing about the purity of the metal, so a 10 tola bar of 22 carat gold contains less pure gold than the same weight in 24 carat. The ounce figure is not the troy ounce used for bullion quotes.

Worked example

A 10 tola gold bar. Grams: 10 × 11.6638038 = 116.638038, shown as 116.64 g. Ounces: 10 × 0.411428 = 4.1143 oz. So a 10 tola bar weighs a little over 116 grams.

Common mistakes

  • Using the ounce result as a troy ounce. Gold prices are quoted per troy ounce (about 31.1 g), while this tool's ounce figure uses the ordinary ounce of about 28.35 g, so do not mix them.
  • Rounding 11.66 g per tola to 12 g in your head, which adds about 3% on a 10 tola bar.
  • Ignoring purity. A tola is a weight, so 22 carat and 24 carat gold of the same tola weight are not worth the same.
  • Confusing a tola with a gram price. A rate quoted per tola must be divided by 11.6638 to get the price per gram.

About this calculator

The tola is a traditional South Asian unit of mass, standardized in British India and still legally defined today at exactly 1 tola = 11.6638038 grams (roughly equivalent to the old Mughal-era silver rupee coin's weight, which is where the unit originates). It's almost exclusively used for precious metals rather than general weight.

Jewelers and gold traders across India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal, as well as Gulf gold souks catering to South Asian expatriates, price and sell gold and silver in tola units — the "10-tola bar" is a standard bullion format in South Asian and Middle Eastern gold markets, alongside gram-denominated bars used elsewhere, so converting between the two is a routine task when comparing prices across regions.
