How it is calculated

The take rate is the part of the money flowing through the platform that it keeps: Take rate = Platform revenue ÷ GMV × 100. GMV (gross merchandise value) is the total value of the transactions handled in the period, before any fees, refunds or costs are taken out. The tool also shows the remainder, 100 − take rate, labelled as the merchant share, and echoes the revenue in dollars.

Revenue and GMV must cover the same period and the same currency. GMV has to be above zero and revenue cannot be negative or larger than GMV, because the tool treats revenue as a slice of GMV; a platform whose revenue includes subscriptions or ads unrelated to GMV may need to enter only the transaction-based part. The merchant share is simply the leftover percentage: it is not net of payment-processing costs, refunds or taxes.

Worked example

A marketplace processed $10,000,000 of orders in a quarter and recognized $1,250,000 of commission and fee revenue on them. Take rate = 1,250,000 ÷ 10,000,000 × 100 = 12.50%. The leftover merchant share is 100 − 12.50 = 87.50%. If GMV doubled to $20,000,000 while revenue grew only to $2,000,000, the take rate would fall to 10.00%, showing that revenue grew more slowly than volume.

Common mistakes

  • Using total company revenue that includes unrelated subscriptions or ads against GMV. That inflates the take rate; use only the revenue earned from the transactions in the GMV figure.
  • Entering net merchandise value (after refunds and cancellations) as GMV in one period and gross in another. Keep the GMV definition the same so rates can be compared.
  • Mixing periods, such as quarterly revenue against annual GMV. The result is then about a quarter of the real take rate.
  • Reading the merchant share as what sellers actually keep. Payment processing, shipping and taxes are not deducted, so it is only 100 minus the take rate.
  • Entering revenue larger than GMV and expecting a result over 100%. The tool refuses this, because a take rate above 100% would mean the platform keeps more than flows through it.

About this calculator

A take rate measures how much of the total money flowing through a marketplace or platform the platform itself keeps as revenue, expressed as a percentage of gross merchandise value (GMV) — the total dollar value of transactions processed. It is calculated as platform revenue divided by GMV, and it is the single most-watched metric for judging how a marketplace business (Uber, Airbnb, Etsy, DoorDash, App Store, ad exchanges) actually monetizes the activity it facilitates.

A low take rate can mean a platform is subsidizing growth or facing heavy competition, while a rising take rate often signals pricing power, added services (ads, fulfillment, financing), or margin pressure passed on to sellers. Investors and operators use take rate to compare monetization efficiency across marketplaces and to model revenue as GMV scales. This calculator divides your platform revenue by GMV to give you the take rate as a clean percentage.
