How it is calculated

The tool estimates GMV from two averages: GMV = number of orders × average order value (AOV). It then applies the take rate, the percentage of GMV the platform keeps as commission or fees: platform revenue = GMV × take rate ÷ 100. Orders must be a whole number, orders and AOV cannot be negative, and the take rate must be between 0 and 100; otherwise there is no result. GMV counts the full value of the goods sold, so it is measured before refunds, cancellations, shipping, taxes and the platform's fees; if you want net figures, deduct returned orders from the order count yourself. The money is shown in dollars. This is a quick estimate from averages, not a sum of individual transactions.

Worked example

A marketplace processed 18,500 orders in a quarter, and the average order was $42.75. GMV = 18,500 × 42.75 = $790,875.00. With a take rate of 12%, platform revenue is 790,875 × 12 ÷ 100 = $94,905.00. The other $695,970 goes to the sellers (before their own costs). The tool shows $790,875.00, $94,905.00 and 18,500 orders. If the take rate rose to 15% on the same GMV, platform revenue would be $118,631.25, even though GMV did not grow.

Common mistakes

  • Reporting GMV as revenue. Only the take-rate share of GMV is the platform's income; the rest belongs to sellers, so quoting $790,875 as revenue overstates it by a large factor.
  • Including cancelled or refunded orders in the order count and then treating the result as sales that stayed. Remove them first if you want the net figure.
  • Using the price of one item as AOV. AOV is the average total per order, so an order with three items counts as the full basket value.
  • Entering the take rate as a decimal. The field is a percentage: type 12 for 12%, not 0.12 (which would be 0.12%).
  • Mixing periods. Orders for a month with an AOV from a different year or season will mislead; both should cover the same period.

About this calculator

Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) is the total dollar value of goods sold through a marketplace, platform, or e-commerce channel over a given period, calculated simply as the sum of the sale price multiplied by the quantity sold across all transactions — before subtracting platform fees, shipping, taxes, refunds, or returns.

Because it’s a top-line, pre-deduction figure, GMV is the metric marketplaces like Amazon, Etsy, and eBay (and platforms such as Shopify or Airbnb) report to show scale and growth, but it should never be confused with revenue: a marketplace only actually earns its commission or fee on that GMV, not the full amount. Sellers and investors track GMV growth alongside take-rate (the platform’s fee percentage) to judge how a marketplace business is actually monetizing its transaction volume.
