Swimming Calories Burned Calculator
See how many calories each swim stroke really burns.

How it is calculated
The tool uses MET values, which express how many times more energy an activity uses than sitting still. Each stroke has a fixed MET: leisure swimming 6.0, freestyle 8.3, backstroke 9.5, breaststroke 10.3 and butterfly 13.8. Calories per minute are MET × 3.5 × weight (kg) ÷ 200, and the total is that figure times the swim time in minutes. Weight is in kilograms and must be between 10 and 650; duration is in minutes and must be above zero. The tool also shows the average calories per minute. If the stroke is missing or not recognised, freestyle is used without any warning. The MET does not change with pace, so a hard and an easy length of the same stroke give the same figure, and age, sex and water temperature are not used.
Worked example
Someone weighing 70 kg swims freestyle for 30 minutes. Freestyle is 8.3 METs. Calories per minute: 8.3 × 3.5 × 70 ÷ 200 = 10.17. Over 30 minutes: 10.17 × 30 = 305.0, shown as 305 calories, or 10.2 per minute. If the same person swam butterfly for the 30 minutes, the figure would be 13.8 × 3.5 × 70 ÷ 200 = 16.9 per minute, or 507 in total, so the stroke changes the result a lot.
Common mistakes
- Entering the weight in pounds. The field is kilograms, so 154 lb should be entered as about 70.
- Entering the time as hours (0.5) instead of minutes (30). The calories would come out at about 5.
- Counting rest time between sets as swim time. Only the minutes you actually swim should go in, or the total is overstated.
- Choosing a single stroke for a mixed session. Run the tool for each stroke and add the totals, or the estimate will be off.
- Assuming backstroke is the easiest stroke. In this tool it is rated above freestyle, and only leisure swimming is lower.
About this calculator
Different swim strokes burn calories at meaningfully different rates because each engages a different mix of muscle groups and resistance — vigorous butterfly can reach roughly 13-14 METs (metabolic equivalents), breaststroke around 10 METs, backstroke around 9.5, freestyle around 8.3, and easy leisure swimming the lightest at 6 METs. Calories burned = MET × 3.5 × weight (kg) ÷ 200 per minute, multiplied by the minutes swum — about 5% more than the simpler MET × kg × hours — so stroke choice alone can shift the calorie total for the same swim time by 30% or more.
Competitive swimmers and coaches use stroke-specific MET values rather than a single generic “swimming” estimate because training sessions routinely mix strokes — a set built around butterfly repeats burns meaningfully more than the same duration of easy leisure swimming, which matters for athletes managing training load and energy intake around high-volume practice blocks. It also explains why swimmers who train mostly freestyle sometimes underestimate their calorie burn on days with heavier butterfly or breaststroke work.
