Subscription Pause Savings Calculator

Enter your monthly fee and how many months you plan to pause.

How it is calculated

The saving is a plain product: savings = monthly fee × months paused, with the fee in dollars. For comparison the tool also shows annual cost = monthly fee × 12. Both the fee and the number of months must be above zero, otherwise no result appears. Fractions of a month work in the calculation (2.5 months at $15.99 gives $39.98), but the months line in the result is rounded to a whole number, so it would read 3 months. Months are not capped at 12: entering 18 gives a saving larger than the annual figure. The tool assumes the fee stays the same, with no refund or proration and no price rise or re-activation fee when the service resumes.

Worked example

A streaming plan costs $15.99 a month and you pause it for 4 months. Savings: 15.99 × 4 = $63.96. The annual cost shown for comparison is 15.99 × 12 = $191.88, so the pause skips 4 of those 12 payments, a third of a year's bill. If the provider charges a re-start fee or raises the price when you return, subtract that from the $63.96 to see the true saving.

Common mistakes

  • Counting months that were already paid. If the current billing period has been charged, only the future months you actually skip count towards the saving.
  • Ignoring re-activation fees or lost promotional prices. A discounted rate that disappears when you resume can cancel part of the saving.
  • Entering the yearly price in the monthly field. A $120 yearly plan is $10 a month; typing 120 overstates both figures twelvefold.
  • Treating the annual figure as what you pay after the pause. It is the cost of a full year with no pause, shown only as a reference.
  • Typing a half month and reading the months line literally. It is rounded up for display (2.5 shows as 3 months) while the savings figure uses the exact 2.5.

About this calculator

Pausing a recurring subscription — a streaming service, gym membership, or software plan — for a set number of months means simply not paying the monthly fee during that window. The savings are the monthly fee multiplied by the number of paused months, and this calculator shows that alongside the full annual cost (monthly fee × 12) for context on how big a dent the pause makes in a year's spending.

People use this when deciding whether it's worth the hassle of pausing and later reactivating a service — for example, pausing a streaming subscription for the three months of a busy season, or freezing a gym membership while traveling — turning a vague “I should cancel this” instinct into a concrete dollar figure.
