How it is calculated

The foot length is converted to each system with its own linear formula. The EU size adds a fixed allowance to the foot length and scales it, and the US and UK sizes count in thirds of an inch.

EU = (L + 1.5) × 1.5

US men = 3 × in − 22, US women = 3 × in − 21, UK = 3 × in − 23, where in = L ÷ 2.54

L is the foot length in centimetres, measured from the heel to the tip of the longest toe, and in is the same length in inches. Each US or UK size step is therefore one third of an inch. All four sizes are shown to 1 decimal and are not rounded to a half size. Only lengths from 19.5 to 35 cm are accepted; shorter or longer values show no result, which keeps the US and UK numbers from going negative. The result does not include shoe-style allowances.

Worked example

The foot measures 26 cm. EU: (26 + 1.5) × 1.5 = 41.25, shown as 41.3. Convert to inches: 26 ÷ 2.54 ≈ 10.236. Then 3 × 10.236 = 30.709. US men: 30.709 − 22 = 8.7. US women: 30.709 − 21 = 9.7. UK: 30.709 − 23 = 7.7. In practice you would choose the nearest size the brand offers, such as EU 41 or 42.

Common mistakes

  • Measuring the shoe or the outside of the foot instead of the foot itself. Measure heel to tip of the longest toe, standing, on paper.
  • Entering the length in millimetres (260) or inches. The field is centimetres, and 260 is outside the 19.5 to 35 cm range, so no result appears.
  • Measuring only one foot. Feet often differ, so use the longer one.
  • Treating the output as exact for every brand. Brands and shoe shapes differ, and a size like 8.7 has to be rounded to a real size in the brand's chart.
  • Mixing men's and women's US sizes. The two scales differ by one full size, so check which row you are reading.

About this calculator

Shoe sizing systems are built around measured foot length, but the three major systems scale that length differently: EU (Paris point) sizing increments by 2/3 of a centimeter per size and adds a fixed manufacturing allowance to the raw foot length, while US and UK sizing use their own separate scales historically based on barleycorns (1/3 inch), with the US scale offset from the UK scale by roughly one full size. These systems were never unified internationally, which is why converting between them from a single physical measurement, rather than trusting a size label from one system to translate directly to another, gives more reliable results.

Podiatrists, shoe retailers, and online shoppers rely on foot-length-based conversion, typically measured the way a Brannock device does, heel to longest toe, because a labeled size in one country's system doesn't map to a fixed size in another once brand-to-brand and last-shape variation is added on top of the base system differences.

Enter your foot length in centimeters and this calculator converts it to the corresponding EU, US, and UK shoe sizes.
