How it is calculated

The conversion uses two fixed relations: BTC = sat ÷ 100,000,000 and bits = sat ÷ 100, because 1 BTC is 100,000,000 satoshis and 1 bit (a microbitcoin) is 100 satoshis. The BTC figure is shown with eight decimals, which is the full precision of the Bitcoin ledger, and the bits figure with two decimals (100 sat gives 1.00 bit, and 1,000 sat gives 10.00 bits). A negative or empty amount returns no result; 0 gives zero. The tool accepts decimals such as 1234.5 and rounds the display (0.00001235 BTC), but the ledger cannot hold a fraction of a satoshi, so the extra digits are only a calculation. It converts units only and does not apply an exchange rate, so no dollar value is shown.

Worked example

A Lightning invoice is for 250,000 sats. Step 1: divide by 100,000,000, so 250,000 ÷ 100,000,000 = 0.0025 BTC, written with eight decimals. Step 2: divide by 100 for bits, 250,000 ÷ 100 = 2,500 bits. The tool shows 0.00250000 BTC and 2,500.00 bits. For a small amount like 1,000 sats the same steps give 0.00001000 BTC.

Common mistakes

  • Dividing by one million instead of one hundred million. That makes the BTC amount 100 times too large.
  • Confusing bits with satoshis: 1 bit is 100 sats, so "2,500 bits" is 250,000 sats, not 2,500.
  • Dropping a zero when counting the decimal places of a BTC amount; with eight decimals, 0.0025 and 0.00025 are easy to mix up.
  • Entering a BTC amount in the satoshi field, which makes the result a hundred million times too small.
  • Expecting a price in dollars or lira: the tool converts units only and needs a separate exchange rate for fiat value.

About this calculator

A satoshi (sat) is the smallest unit of Bitcoin that can currently be recorded on the blockchain, named after Bitcoin's pseudonymous creator: 1 BTC = 100,000,000 satoshis, fixed by the protocol's 8-decimal-place accounting. A "bit" (1 microbitcoin, 100 satoshis) is a commonly used intermediate unit for everyday amounts too small to comfortably express in whole BTC.

Since a single BTC is worth tens of thousands of dollars, traders, Lightning Network users making micropayments, and wallet/exchange developers work almost exclusively in satoshis for anything short of a full coin — quoting transaction fees, tips, and small transfers in sats rather than fractional BTC avoids the awkwardness of numbers like 0.00003421.
