Return on Assets (ROA) Calculator

Find your return on assets.

How it is calculated

The tool divides net income by total assets and multiplies by 100: ROA % = net income ÷ total assets × 100. Both inputs are money amounts in the same currency and for the same period, for example one fiscal year's net income against the year's total assets. The result is shown as a percentage. If total assets are zero or negative, no result is returned because the ratio is meaningless. Net income can be negative, which gives a negative ROA (a loss relative to assets). The tool uses the single total-assets figure you enter; it does not average opening and closing balances for you.

Worked example

A small firm reports net income of 85,000 and total assets of 1,250,000. Divide: 85,000 ÷ 1,250,000 = 0.068. Multiply by 100 to get a percentage. The tool shows 6.80%. In plain words, each unit of assets produced about 0.068 units of profit over the period.

Common mistakes

  • Using revenue or operating profit instead of net income. ROA here is net income over total assets.
  • Entering net income for a quarter but total assets as a year-end figure; the periods should match, or annualise the income first.
  • Entering equity instead of total assets. Equity gives return on equity, which is a different and usually higher number.
  • Entering the two amounts in different units, such as income in thousands and assets in full units.
  • Comparing ROA across very different industries. Asset-heavy businesses naturally show lower ROA than asset-light ones.

About this calculator

This calculator finds return on assets (ROA) by dividing net income by total assets and expressing the result as a percentage. ROA measures how efficiently a company turns what it owns — equipment, cash, inventory, everything on the balance sheet — into profit, regardless of how that ownership was financed.

Investors use it to compare how efficiently different companies use their assets, and business owners use it to track whether their own asset base is generating enough profit over time.
