How it is calculated

The conversion is a fixed factor: Sv = rem × 0.01. From the sievert value the tool derives the other units by powers of ten: mSv = Sv × 1,000, µSv = Sv × 1,000,000, and, working back from the rem you typed, mrem = rem × 1,000. The input is a dose in rem, and the figure can be zero or any positive number; a negative dose gives no result. Results are rounded for display: sievert to six decimals, millisievert to four, microsievert and millirem to two. Because of this rounding, a very small dose such as 0.0000001 rem shows as 0.000000 Sv even though it is not zero. The tool changes only the unit of a dose that is already stated as an equivalent dose; it cannot convert absorbed dose (rad or gray) without knowing the radiation weighting factor.

Worked example

A badge reports 250 mrem for the year, which is 0.25 rem. In sieverts: 0.25 × 0.01 = 0.002500 Sv. Multiplying by 1,000 gives 2.5000 mSv, and by 1,000,000 gives 2,500.00 µSv. The millirem line simply repeats the original dose as 250.00 mrem. So a quarter of a rem is two and a half millisieverts, the number you would compare against limits quoted in SI units.

Common mistakes

  • Typing a dose in millirem into the rem field. 250 mrem is 0.25 rem; entering 250 treats it as 250 rem and gives 2.5 Sv, a thousand times too much.
  • Confusing the shift between units. One sievert is 100 rem, not 1,000; the factor of 1,000 is between sievert and millisievert, or rem and millirem.
  • Treating rem and rad as the same thing. Rem is an equivalent dose and rad an absorbed dose, so a reading in rad or gray must not be entered here directly.
  • Reading 0.000000 Sv as zero dose. Very small doses are rounded at six decimals, so check the microsievert line for the real size.
  • Entering a negative number to represent a reduction. Only zero or positive doses are accepted.

About this calculator

Rem (roentgen equivalent man) and sievert (Sv) both measure radiation equivalent dose — absorbed dose weighted by the biological damage a given radiation type causes — but rem is the older CGS unit still common in U.S. regulatory and medical contexts, while sievert is the SI unit used almost everywhere else. The conversion is fixed and simple: 1 Sv = 100 rem, so 1 rem = 10 millisievert = 10,000 microsievert.
