Regular Hexagon Area Calculator

Find the area of a regular hexagon.

Result

64.95 units²
30.00 units

How it is calculated

For a regular hexagon, with six equal sides and equal angles, the area is A = (3√3 / 2) × s² and the perimeter is P = 6 × s, where s is the side length. The factor 3√3 / 2 is about 2.598, because a regular hexagon splits into six equilateral triangles, each with area (√3 / 4) × s².

The side can be in any unit; the result is labelled 'units' and 'units²', so read it as the same unit you entered (centimetres give cm², metres give m²). Results are rounded to two decimals, and the side must be greater than zero. The tool needs a regular hexagon: an irregular six-sided shape cannot be measured from one side.

Worked example

A regular hexagon with side 5. Square the side: 5² = 25. Multiply by 3√3 / 2, about 2.598: 25 × 2.598 = 64.95 units². Perimeter: 6 × 5 = 30.00 units. Doubling the side to 10 would give 259.81 units², four times the area but only twice the perimeter.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the distance between two opposite flat sides (the width across flats) as the side. The side is one edge, and the across-flats distance is about 1.732 times larger.
  • Entering the corner-to-corner distance. In a regular hexagon that is exactly twice the side, so halve it first.
  • Using a hexagon that is not regular, such as a stretched one. Equal sides are required.
  • Mixing the unit labels. The output says 'units' even when you measured in centimetres or metres; the area is in that unit squared.
  • Doubling the side and expecting double the area. Area grows with the square of the side.

About this calculator

This calculator finds the area of a regular hexagon using A = (3√3/2)·s², a formula derived by splitting the hexagon into 6 equilateral triangles radiating from its center — since each triangle has area (√3/4)·s², multiplying by 6 gives the coefficient 3√3/2. Perimeter is simply 6 times the side length.

Geometry students verifying homework, engineers and architects designing hexagonal tiles, honeycomb structures, or paving patterns, and hobbyists working on quilting, woodworking, or board-game design (hex-grid maps) use this. Enter the side length to get the area and perimeter.
