Pregnancy Protein Needs
Estimate the daily protein target recommended during pregnancy.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool uses one weight-based rule for the whole pregnancy: protein (g/day) = body weight (kg) × 1.1. Weight is in kilograms and 1.1 is the grams of protein per kilogram per day. The result is shown with one decimal. The tool does not ask for the trimester, number of babies, height or activity, so the same ratio is applied at every stage, and it does not add a flat extra amount for the later trimesters. Because the ratio is applied to the weight you enter, the result is only as good as that weight: use the weight your own guidance refers to. Body weight must be between 2 and 650 kg; anything outside that range shows no result. It is an estimate for planning meals, not medical advice.
Worked example
A woman with a body weight of 65 kg enters 65. Multiply by the ratio: 65 × 1.1 = 71.5. The tool shows 71.5 g of protein per day. For comparison, the general adult figure of 0.8 g/kg would be 65 × 0.8 = 52 g, so the pregnancy ratio adds 19.5 g a day. A 55 kg woman would see 60.5 g, and a 75 kg woman 82.5 g, because the target moves in a straight line with weight.
Common mistakes
- Entering weight in pounds. The field is kilograms, so 143 lb must be entered as about 65. Typing 143 shows 157.3 g, more than double the intended figure.
- Typing the current weight late in pregnancy without knowing which weight your guidance uses. The ratio is applied to whatever number you type and rises with every extra kilogram.
- Expecting the result to change with trimester or with twins. The tool applies the same 1.1 g/kg all the way through and has no field for the number of babies.
- Reading the figure as an upper limit or a target to force. It is an estimate for meal planning; follow your own doctor or midwife if they set a different amount.
- Counting the weight of the food instead of the protein in it. 100 g of chicken is not 100 g of protein, so check the protein line on the label.
About this calculator
Protein needs rise during pregnancy to support fetal growth, placental tissue, increased maternal blood volume and breast tissue development. Standard guidance, including recommendations echoed by ACOG and dietary reference intakes, raises the general adult target of about 0.8 g/kg body weight per day to roughly 1.1 g/kg per day during pregnancy. This calculator applies that 1.1 g/kg to your body weight at every stage of pregnancy, with no trimester adjustment.
Obstetric dietitians and prenatal care providers use this kind of estimate when counseling pregnant patients on meal planning, particularly for those who are vegetarian, carrying multiples, or have restricted diets where hitting the higher target takes deliberate planning rather than happening automatically. Protein needs scale with body weight, so a heavier or lighter pre-pregnancy weight changes the actual gram target even though the underlying rule stays the same.
This calculator takes your body weight and returns an estimated daily protein target in grams.
