Pennyweights to Grams Converter

Enter a value in pennyweights to convert it to grams, grains.

Result

19.4397 g
300.00 gr

How it is calculated

Enter a weight in pennyweights (dwt). The tool multiplies it by the fixed factor 1.55517384, because one pennyweight is exactly 1.55517384 grams: grams = dwt × 1.55517384. It also gives grains with grains = dwt × 24, since a pennyweight is 24 troy grains (and 20 dwt make a troy ounce). Grams are shown to four decimals and grains to two. This is a straight proportional conversion with no rounding of the input. The tool accepts any number and does not stop negative entries, so only use positive weights. Pennyweights are a troy unit used for precious metals; they are not the same as avoirdupois ounces or pounds used for everyday goods.

Worked example

A gold chain weighs 12.5 dwt. Grams = 12.5 × 1.55517384 = 19.4397 g. Grains = 12.5 × 24 = 300.00 gr. As a check, 12.5 dwt is 12.5 ÷ 20 = 0.625 troy ounces, and 0.625 × 31.1034768 g = 19.4397 g, which agrees. A refiner who quotes in grams would be sent 19.44 g, rounded to two decimals.

Common mistakes

  • Using the factor for a normal (avoirdupois) ounce. A pennyweight is a troy unit and equals 1.555 g, not 28.35 g divided by 20.
  • Mixing up a troy ounce (31.1035 g, 20 dwt) with an ordinary ounce (28.3495 g). Using the wrong one changes a gold price noticeably.
  • Typing a thousands separator such as 1,250. The tool then returns no result; enter plain digits (1250) and a point for decimals.
  • Reading the unit as a price or a coin. Here dwt only means the troy weight unit of 24 grains.
  • Rounding the result too early. Round only the final gram figure, as gold is priced to fractions of a gram.

About this calculator

The pennyweight (dwt) is a small unit within the troy weight system, equal to 1/20 of a troy ounce, or exactly 1.55517384 grams (and 24 grains). Its name comes from its historical origin as the weight of an actual English silver penny, and while the coin is long gone, the unit survives specifically in the precious-metals trade because a full troy ounce is too coarse a unit for pricing small jewelry items.

Jewelers and goldsmiths use pennyweight to weigh and price gold and silver findings, chains, and small cast pieces — a jewelry scale is typically switchable between grams and dwt for this reason — converting to grams whenever a customer, refiner, or overseas supplier expects the metric figure instead.
