Mixed Number to Improper Fraction Calculator

Enter a mixed number or improper fraction and pick a direction.

Result

15/4
3.750000
3 6/8

How it is calculated

For the default direction (mixed to improper) the tool computes the combined numerator as whole × denominator + numerator, keeps the denominator, then divides both by their greatest common divisor, so the answer is always in lowest terms. For a negative whole number the fraction part is subtracted instead, so −2 ¾ becomes −11/4. In the reverse direction (improper to mixed) it divides the numerator by the denominator: the quotient is the whole part and the remainder over the denominator, reduced, is the fraction part. Only integers are accepted, the denominator cannot be zero, and the whole-number box is optional and treated as 0 if left empty. The decimal value is also shown to six places.

Worked example

Convert 3 6/8. The whole number times the denominator is 3 × 8 = 24, and adding the numerator gives 24 + 6 = 30, so the improper fraction is 30/8. The greatest common divisor of 30 and 8 is 2, so dividing both by 2 gives 15/4. As a decimal, 15 ÷ 4 = 3.750000. The tool also echoes your input as "3 6/8". To check the answer, convert back: 15 ÷ 4 = 3 remainder 3, which is 3 3/4, the same value as 3 6/8 in lowest terms.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to multiply the whole number by the denominator before adding the numerator, for example turning 3 6/8 into 9/8 by adding 3 + 6 instead of multiplying.
  • Changing the denominator. It stays the same during the conversion; only the numerator changes, apart from the final reduction.
  • Entering a decimal such as 2.5 in the whole-number box. Only whole numbers are accepted in all three boxes, so write 2 1/2 instead.
  • Entering a negative mixed number with the minus sign on the fraction part. The sign belongs on the whole number: −2 3/4 means −(2 + 3/4), whereas a minus on the numerator while the whole number is positive subtracts the fraction.
  • Expecting the answer in the unreduced form 30/8. The tool always reduces, so you get 15/4.

About this calculator

A mixed number like 2¾ combines a whole number with a fraction, while an improper fraction expresses the same quantity entirely as one fraction with a numerator larger than its denominator — 2¾ becomes 11/4. Converting between the two is done by multiplying the whole number by the denominator, adding the numerator, and keeping the same denominator (and reversing the process to go the other way).

Improper fractions are usually easier to multiply, divide, and combine in algebraic work, while mixed numbers are more intuitive for everyday reading — a recipe or a tape measure reads more naturally as 2¾ cups than 11/4 cups. Students and teachers use this conversion constantly in fraction arithmetic, and it's a standard step before multiplying or dividing fractions that include whole-number parts.
