Mil to Micrometer Converter

Enter a thickness in mils to convert to micrometres.

How it is calculated

The conversion multiplies by exact factors: µm = mil × 25.4 and mm = mil × 0.0254. One mil is 0.001 inch and one inch is defined as 25.4 mm, so one mil is exactly 25.4 micrometres. Micrometres are shown with two decimals and millimetres with four decimals, so very thin values lose detail in the millimetre line: 0.001 mil shows as 0.03 µm but 0.0000 mm. Thousands separators appear in large results. The tool does not reject negative numbers; it simply converts them. Do not confuse the mil (thousandth of an inch) with the millimetre, which is about 39.37 times larger.

Worked example

A protective coating is specified at 3.5 mil dry film thickness. Micrometres: 3.5 × 25.4 = 88.90 µm. Millimetres: 3.5 × 0.0254 = 0.0889 mm, which the tool shows as 0.0889 mm. So a data sheet that asks for 90 µm is just about met by a 3.5 mil coating, while a 3 mil coating (76.20 µm) would fall short of it.

Common mistakes

  • Reading mil as millimetre. A mil is a thousandth of an inch, about 0.0254 mm, so 5 mil is roughly 127 µm, not 5 mm.
  • Treating mil as a thousandth of a millimetre. That unit is the micrometre, and one mil is 25.4 of them.
  • Using the wrong unit for the output. The first result is in µm and the second in mm; an 88.90 µm film is 0.0889 mm, not 0.889 mm.
  • Entering a thickness in inches. 0.0035 inch must be typed as 3.5 mil here, otherwise the answer is a thousand times too small.

About this calculator

A mil (also called a “thou,” short for thousandth) is one thousandth of an inch, a unit used almost exclusively in manufacturing and engineering contexts where inch-based measurements are the norm — coating and film thickness, wire gauges, sheet metal, and machining tolerances.

This calculator converts a thickness in mils to micrometres (1 mil = 25.4 µm exactly) and to millimetres, letting engineers and quality control teams translate between the imperial mil and the metric micrometre that most international specifications, datasheets and measuring equipment use — a simple but essential conversion wherever a US-sourced spec meets a metric production line.
