3D Midpoint Calculator

Find the midpoint of two 3D points.

How it is calculated

For points P1 = (x1, y1, z1) and P2 = (x2, y2, z2) the midpoint is found by averaging each axis on its own: x = (x1 + x2) / 2, y = (y1 + y2) / 2, z = (z1 + z2) / 2. All six coordinates are required, and negatives and decimals are accepted. The tool is unit-free, so the answer is in the same unit as your input (metres, millimetres, game units). Each coordinate is rounded to two decimals. Only the midpoint is returned, not the distance between the points. The midpoint is equally far from both points and lies on the straight segment joining them.

Worked example

Take P1 = (1, −4, 7) and P2 = (5, 2, −3). x: (1 + 5) / 2 = 3.00. y: (−4 + 2) / 2 = −2 / 2 = −1.00. z: (7 + (−3)) / 2 = 4 / 2 = 2.00. The midpoint is (3.00, −1.00, 2.00). Each axis changes by the same fraction (half) from one point to the other, so the new point sits exactly halfway along the line.

Common mistakes

  • Dropping the sign of a negative coordinate, for example typing 4 instead of −4 for y1, which moves the midpoint a long way.
  • Entering the z values in the wrong row, so P1 gets z2 and P2 gets z1; this only gives the same answer for the midpoint but swaps the roles if you later use the points for something else.
  • Mixing units between axes, such as x in metres and z in centimetres.
  • Expecting a different weighting: this is the exact halfway point, and a point one-third of the way needs a separate calculation.

About this calculator

This calculator finds the midpoint of two points in 3D space by averaging their x, y and z coordinates separately — the point exactly halfway along the straight line connecting them.

3D artists and game developers use it to place an object between two others or find the center of an edge, CAD and engineering users use it to locate the middle of a component, and geometry students use it to check coordinate-based proofs.
