How it is calculated
The tool compares one quarter's revenue growth with what was spent to produce it. net new ARR = (rev_current − rev_prior) × 4, because quarterly revenue is multiplied by 4 to give a yearly run rate. magic number = net new ARR ÷ sm_prior, where sm_prior is the sales and marketing spend of the prior quarter, since spend takes time to show up as revenue. A second figure is the payback in months, 12 ÷ magic number. If the magic number is zero or negative, the payback is shown as a dash. The revenue fields are recurring revenue for a full quarter, not monthly figures. The payback uses revenue, not gross margin, so it is shorter than a margin-based payback. Spend must be above zero.
Worked example
Last quarter your recurring revenue was $1,200,000 and this quarter it is $1,300,000. Last quarter you spent $450,000 on sales and marketing. Growth in the quarter: 1,300,000 − 1,200,000 = $100,000. Annualized net new ARR: 100,000 × 4 = $400,000.00. Magic number: 400,000 ÷ 450,000 = 0.89. Payback: 12 ÷ 0.89 = 13.5 months. In other words, each dollar of sales and marketing last quarter produced about 89 cents of new annual recurring revenue.
Common mistakes
- Using this quarter's spend instead of last quarter's. The formula pairs the revenue gain with the earlier spend; using current spend for a fast-growing company lowers the number.
- Entering monthly revenue in the quarterly fields. Both revenue fields should be a quarter's recurring revenue, or the ×4 annualization gives the wrong scale.
- Including one-time revenue such as setup fees or services. Only recurring revenue should be in the two revenue fields, or the growth looks inflated.
- Swapping the two quarters. If the earlier quarter is entered as current, growth becomes negative and the tool shows a negative magic number and a dash for payback.
- Leaving out part of the sales and marketing cost. Salaries, commissions and tools count, not just advertising, so a figure built from ad spend alone looks better than it should.
About this calculator
The SaaS Magic Number measures how efficiently a company turns sales and marketing spend into new recurring revenue. The formula is: (current quarter revenue minus prior quarter revenue) multiplied by 4, divided by prior quarter S&M spend. Multiplying by 4 annualizes the single quarter's revenue gain so it can be compared directly against a full year of run-rate economics, even though the spend that produced it happened in just one quarter.
Venture investors and SaaS operators use this number as a quick health check on go-to-market efficiency: a magic number above 0.75 generally signals the business is ready to invest more aggressively in sales and marketing, a score between 0.5 and 0.75 suggests the engine works but needs tuning, and anything below 0.5 is usually read as a warning that new revenue is costing too much to acquire. Boards frequently ask for this figure alongside CAC payback and net revenue retention when deciding whether to fund a bigger sales team.
This calculator takes this quarter's and last quarter's recurring revenue along with last quarter's sales and marketing spend and returns your magic number instantly, so you can track sales efficiency quarter over quarter.
