How it is calculated

The tool multiplies your points by a value per point that you enter in cents, then converts to dollars: cash value = points × cents per point ÷ 100. It also shows the same rate in dollars (cents ÷ 100) to four decimals, so 1.5 cents becomes $0.0150. The value per point is your own assumption, not something the tool looks up: it should come from how you plan to redeem, for example the statement-credit rate or the effective rate on a travel booking. Points and cents per point must each be zero or more. Zero in either field gives $0.00. Taxes, fees and expiry are not included.

Worked example

You hold 50,000 points and expect to redeem them at 1.5 cents each. Cash value: 50,000 × 1.5 ÷ 100 = $750.00. The rate shown in dollars is 1.5 ÷ 100 = $0.0150 per point. If instead you redeem for a flat 1 cent per point, the same balance is worth 50,000 × 1 ÷ 100 = $500.00, so the choice of redemption changes the value by $250 on this balance.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the value per point in dollars, such as 0.015, instead of cents (1.5). The field is in cents, so 0.015 would value 50,000 points at only $7.50.
  • Using the best redemption you have ever seen as the rate for all points. If you will redeem for cash back, use that rate, not a transfer-partner rate you may not use.
  • Forgetting that a points price is not the whole cost. Taxes, surcharges or fees paid at booking are separate, so compare the value against the cash price you would actually have paid.
  • Assuming the points keep their value. Programs can change redemption rates or expire points, and the calculation is a snapshot at the rate you enter.
  • Comparing two programs using different units. One may quote cents per point and another points per dollar, so convert one to the other before entering numbers.

About this calculator

Loyalty or rewards points only have a usable value once they’re redeemed, and that redemption value can vary widely depending on how the points are used — a fixed cents-per-point cash-back redemption is worth far less than the same points transferred to a premium airline or hotel partner for an aspirational booking. This calculator converts a raw points balance into an estimated dollar value by multiplying the number of points by the per-point value you specify, letting you compare offers.

Retailers and card issuers set an official “suggested” redemption rate in their program terms, but savvy points collectors track the real-world value they extract instead, since that number can be two, three, or more times higher for redemptions like transferring points to a partner program versus taking a statement credit. Comparing your points value against the annual fee or spending required to earn them is the standard way loyalty program members judge whether a card or program is actually worth keeping.
