Long Run Distance Calculator
Find the right long-run distance for your training week.
Result
How it is calculated
You enter your total weekly running distance W and the share of it you want in the long run, p in percent. The tool gives long run = W × p / 100 and remaining = W − long run, the distance left for all your other runs that week. Both are shown to one decimal with the label "km". If the percentage is left empty it defaults to 30. Weekly distance must be above zero, and the percentage must be above 0 and at most 60, otherwise there is no result. The tool does not know your experience, race distance or the length of a single run in time. It also labels the result "km" even when you entered miles, so read it in your own unit.
Worked example
A runner covers 48 km a week and wants the long run to be 28 % of it. Long run: 48 × 28 / 100 = 13.44, shown as 13.4 km. Remaining distance: 48 − 13.44 = 34.56, shown as 34.6 km. The tool shows a long run of 13.4 km and 34.6 km left for the other runs of the week. If the runner spread the remaining 34.6 km over three easy runs, each would be around 11.5 km, which shows how the long run sits next to the rest of the week.
Common mistakes
- Typing the percentage as a fraction, for example 0.3. The field is in percent, so 0.3 is rejected as too low and gives no result.
- Using last week's long run instead of the whole week's total as the weekly figure. The weekly number must include every run, long run included.
- Pushing the percentage up to make a longer long run without growing weekly volume. The tool allows up to 60 %, but a long run that large is a share of the week the tool does not judge for you.
- Entering miles and reading the label as kilometres. The label is always km, whatever unit you typed.
- Treating the result as a time. It is distance only, so a 13.4 km long run takes different minutes for different paces.
About this calculator
Distance-running coaches use a well-established rule of thumb that the weekly long run should make up roughly 25-30% of total weekly mileage — a runner covering 40km a week would target a long run of about 10-12km, structured to build aerobic endurance without eating into the recovery needed for the rest of the week’s training.
This percentage-based approach appears in nearly every popular marathon and half-marathon training methodology, from Jack Daniels’ running formula to Hal Higdon’s beginner and intermediate plans, precisely because a long run that grows too large relative to weekly volume is one of the most common causes of overuse injury and burnout in distance runners. Coaches use it as a guardrail when a runner wants to push their long run further: if it starts exceeding roughly a third of the week’s total mileage, the standard advice is to build up total weekly volume first, rather than the long run in isolation.
The long-run share accepts any value above 0 up to 60%, with the 25-30% range above as the one to aim for.
