How it is calculated

The tool uses a league of exactly 3 statute miles: miles = leagues × 3 and km = leagues × 4.828032, since 1 mile is 1.609344 km. Both results are rounded to two decimals. Any number is accepted, with no limit and no negative check. The league has never been a single standard: land leagues, nautical leagues (3 nautical miles, about 5.56 km) and the old Spanish, French or Portuguese leagues all differ, so this tool shows only the 3-mile English-language convention. If a text clearly means another league, convert with that definition instead.

Worked example

Take the number in the title of a famous novel, 20,000 leagues. Miles: 20,000 × 3 = 60,000.00 mi. Kilometres: 20,000 × 4.828032 = 96,560.64 km. For comparison, the Earth's circumference is about 40,000 km, so this distance is more than twice around the planet, which shows the figure describes a travelled distance rather than a depth.
