How it is calculated
You count until you have felt 10 movements, note how many minutes that took, and enter that figure. The tool converts it to two rates:
movements per hour = 600 / minutes
minutes per movement = minutes / 10
The 600 comes from 10 movements × 60 minutes per hour. Minutes can be a decimal, from just above 0 up to 600; a longer time, zero or a negative value returns no result. Both numbers are shown with one decimal. The tool only converts your count into rates. It does not tell you whether a result is normal or worrying, because what matters is your own usual pattern at the same time of day. If a count is clearly longer than usual or the movements seem reduced, contact your midwife or doctor rather than waiting.
Worked example
You start counting after a meal and feel the tenth movement after 30 minutes.
Movements per hour = 600 / 30 = 20.0.
Minutes per movement = 30 / 10 = 3.0 minutes.
If your next day's count at the same time takes 45 minutes, the rate becomes 13.3 per hour and 4.5 minutes per movement, a visible change from your usual pattern to note down.
Common mistakes
- Entering the number of movements (10) instead of the minutes it took. The field is the time to reach ten movements.
- Entering the time in hours or as a clock time (0:30). The field takes minutes as a number, so use 30.
- Counting each small flutter, hiccup or a burst of kicks as separate movements when your provider counts them differently. Use the same counting rule every day so the numbers are comparable.
- Comparing counts taken at different times of day or lying differently. Count at the same time and in the same position, usually when the baby is active.
- Using the rate as a diagnosis, or waiting because the number looks acceptable. A change from your usual pattern matters more than the figure, and worry is itself a reason to call.

About this calculator
The count-to-ten kick count method is a standard fetal movement monitoring technique recommended by obstetric care providers in the third trimester: the mother notes the time she starts counting and marks how long it takes to feel 10 distinct fetal movements, typically done at the same time each day when the baby tends to be active. Consistently taking noticeably longer than usual to reach 10 movements, or a clear drop in the baby's normal activity pattern, is a signal to contact a care provider.
Pregnant people and their obstetric providers use kick counting as a simple, no-equipment way to keep an eye on fetal wellbeing between prenatal appointments, since a healthy baby's movement pattern is fairly consistent day to day and a real change is often (though not always) an early, actionable sign worth checking rather than something to wait out.
