Improper to Mixed Fraction Converter
Enter the numerator and denominator to convert to a mixed number.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool does an integer division of the numerator by the denominator. The quotient is the whole part and the remainder is the new numerator: n / d = q + r / d. The remainder fraction is then reduced by dividing the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor, so the answer is always in lowest terms. If the remainder is zero only the whole number is shown (24/6 gives 4). A numerator smaller than the denominator comes back as a plain fraction with no whole part. The decimal value is also shown, rounded to four places. Both inputs must be whole numbers and the denominator cannot be zero, otherwise no result is shown. The sign is the usual one: a negative on either the numerator or the denominator makes the answer negative (38/−12 gives −3 1/6), while two negatives cancel out.
Worked example
Convert 38/12. Dividing 38 by 12 gives a quotient of 3, because 3 × 12 = 36, with a remainder of 38 − 36 = 2. That gives 3 and 2/12. The greatest common divisor of 2 and 12 is 2, so 2/12 reduces to 1/6. The mixed number is 3 1/6. The decimal check is 38 / 12 ≈ 3.1667, matching 3 + 1/6.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting to reduce the remainder. 3 2/12 is correct but not in lowest terms; the tool gives 3 1/6.
- Putting the remainder over the quotient or the numerator instead of the original denominator. The fractional part is always remainder over the original denominator before reducing.
- Entering a decimal such as 7.5 for the numerator. Only whole numbers are accepted and a decimal gives no result, so write 15/2 instead.
- Expecting a whole part from a proper fraction such as 3/4. It is already below 1, so it stays 3/4.
- Writing a negative mixed number as −3 and then +1/6. The minus applies to the whole number: −38/12 is −3 1/6, which is −(3 + 1/6), not −3 + 1/6.
About this calculator
An improper fraction (numerator larger than or equal to the denominator, like 17/5) represents the same value as a mixed number (a whole number plus a proper fraction, like 3 2/5); converting between them is just long division, where the quotient becomes the whole part and the remainder over the original denominator becomes the fractional part, simplified to lowest terms using the greatest common divisor.
This conversion is a core skill in arithmetic education, but it's also used constantly outside the classroom by cooks scaling recipes, carpenters and machinists reading tape measures in eighths and sixteenths of an inch, and anyone working with imperial measurements that don't divide evenly.
