Hundredweight (long) to Kilograms Converter

Enter a value in hundredweight (long) to convert it to kilograms, pounds.

How it is calculated

The converter multiplies the number you enter by fixed factors: kg = cwt × 50.80234544 and lb = cwt × 112. Here cwt is the long (imperial) hundredweight, which is 112 avoirdupois pounds; the kilogram factor follows from 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg. Results are rounded to two decimals for display, so the kilogram figure is rounded from a longer value. The tool does not reject zero or negative numbers, it just scales them, so a negative input gives a negative weight. It does not convert the US short hundredweight (100 lb), which would need a different factor of 45.359237.

Worked example

A feed merchant lists 12.5 cwt (long). Kilograms: 12.5 × 50.80234544 = 635.0293, shown as 635.03 kg. Pounds: 12.5 × 112 = 1,400.00 lb. As a check, 1,400 lb × 0.45359237 gives the same 635.03 kg, so the two outputs agree.

Common mistakes

  • Using this tool for a US hundredweight. The US short cwt is 100 lb (45.36 kg), the long one here is 112 lb, so US figures come out about 12% too high.
  • Confusing hundredweight with a tonne. A long hundredweight is about 50.8 kg, and 20 of them make a long ton (1,016 kg), not a metric tonne.
  • Rounding the factor to 50 kg by eye. On 12.5 cwt that error is about 10 kg, which matters in a feed or fertiliser invoice.
  • Dropping the result's decimals when reconciling invoices. The tool shows two decimals, and rounding a figure like 635.03 to 635 hides small discrepancies.

About this calculator

The long hundredweight (also called the imperial hundredweight, abbreviated cwt) equals 112 pounds — historically one-twentieth of a long ton — and converts to 50.80235 kg. It's distinct from the US "short" hundredweight, which is simply 100 lb (45.36 kg); the "long" version is the one still used in the UK, Ireland, and parts of the Commonwealth.

The unit survives mainly in British and Irish agriculture (crop yields, livestock feed, fertilizer sold by the cwt) and in historical trade and shipping records, so anyone working with UK farm data, older commodity contracts, or Commonwealth-era documents needs the long hundredweight conversion to reconcile figures with metric kilograms.
