Result

#Travel #travel #summer_2026 #sunsetlovers
4
#sunsetlovers (12 chars)

How it is calculated

The tool searches the text for every # followed by one or more letters, digits or underscores; letters from any language count, so #İstanbul is found. The match ends at the first space, punctuation mark or other symbol. Each match is listed in the order it appears, with the # added back, and the total number of matches is shown as the count.

It also reports the longest hashtag, measured in characters without the #; when two are equally long, the first one wins. Duplicates are not merged and capitals are not ignored, so #Travel and #travel are counted as two. A # in the middle of a word or after other text still counts (C#sharp gives #sharp), a hashtag made only of digits counts, and a lone # does not. If the text has no hashtags the count is 0. Platform limits differ, so compare the count with the current rules of the platform you post on.

Worked example

Text: Sunset at the beach #Travel #travel #summer_2026 #sunsetlovers. The matches in order are #Travel, #travel, #summer_2026 and #sunsetlovers, so the count is 4. Note that #Travel and #travel are counted separately. Lengths without the #: Travel 6, travel 6, summer_2026 11 and sunsetlovers 12, so the longest is #sunsetlovers (12 chars).

Common mistakes

  • Expecting duplicates to be merged. #Travel and #travel count as two, so the number can be higher than the number of different tags you use.
  • Forgetting that a hyphen or a dot ends a tag. #well-known is read as #well, and #summer.2026 as #summer, so the rest is not part of the hashtag.
  • Putting a space after the # sign. "# travel" is not a hashtag, and the tool does not count it.
  • Counting a # that belongs to something else, such as C#, an issue number like #12 in a note, or a colour code. A short number after # is a valid hashtag for the tool and increases the count.
  • Treating the count as the platform's allowed limit. The tool only counts what is in the pasted text; the maximum for each platform can change.

About this calculator

This tool scans a block of text for every token that starts with # followed by letters, numbers, or underscores, lists each hashtag it finds, counts the total, and identifies the longest one — the same pattern-matching logic that powers hashtag detection on social platforms themselves.

Social media managers and marketers use hashtag counts to stay within platform norms and best practices: Instagram technically allows up to 30 hashtags per post but engagement research generally favors far fewer, X/Twitter posts typically perform better with just 1-3, and LinkedIn recommends a handful of highly relevant ones rather than a long list. Pasting a draft caption here before publishing gives a quick, objective count and full list — useful for catching accidental duplicate tags, checking you haven’t exceeded a platform’s practical limit, or spotting an overlong hashtag that won’t fit well in a display feed.
