Harmonic Series Sum Calculator
Add the first n terms of the harmonic series and get the running partial sum instantly.

How it is calculated
Enter the number of terms n, a whole number from 1 to 10,000,000. The tool adds 1 + 1/2 + 1/3 + … + 1/n term by term and also reports the last term 1/n. The sum is shown to 2 decimals. The last term is shown to 2 decimals while it is 0.01 or more, and with about six significant figures once it is smaller, so n = 1000 shows 0.00100000 and n = 10,000,000 shows 0.000000100000. A decimal such as 5.9, zero, a negative number or a value above 10 million returns no result. For large n the sum is close to ln(n) + 0.5772, which grows very slowly: about 5.19 for n = 100, 7.49 for n = 1,000, 16.70 for n = 10,000,000.
Worked example
For n = 10, add the first ten terms: 1 + 0.5 + 0.3333 + 0.25 + 0.2 + 0.1667 + 0.1429 + 0.125 + 0.1111 + 0.1 = 2.9290. The tool rounds this to 2.93. The last term is 1/10 = 0.10. Check with the approximation: ln(10) + 0.5772 ≈ 2.3026 + 0.5772 = 2.88, close but not identical, because the approximation improves as n grows.
Common mistakes
- Assuming the sum settles near a fixed value because the terms shrink. The harmonic series diverges, so the total keeps rising, though extremely slowly.
- Typing a decimal count such as 5.9 and expecting it to be rounded. The number of terms must be a whole number, and anything else shows no result.
- Mixing up the harmonic series with 1/n² or with a geometric series. Those converge, but this tool sums 1/k, not 1/k².
- Entering a huge n to "see divergence". The limit is 10 million terms, where the sum is only 16.70, so the growth is slow rather than visible here.
- Confusing the last term with the sum. The second figure is only 1/n, the size of the final step, not a running total.
About this calculator
The harmonic series is the sum 1 + 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/4 + ... + 1/n. Each term shrinks, and it’s tempting to assume the total settles down to a fixed number the way 1 + 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + ... does — but the harmonic series is a classic counterexample: it diverges, growing without bound, just agonizingly slowly. Its partial sum after n terms is closely approximated by ln(n) + γ, where γ ≈ 0.5772 is the Euler-Mascheroni constant, meaning it takes roughly e^100 terms just to pass 100.
This calculator computes the exact partial sum through your chosen n along with the value of the final term (1/n), which is a staple exercise in calculus courses covering series convergence and divergence tests. The harmonic series’ name actually comes from music: the frequencies of overtones in the harmonic series of a vibrating string are proportional to 1, 1/2, 1/3... of the fundamental wavelength, which is why the same 1/n pattern shows up in acoustics and instrument design as well as in analyzing the average-case running time of algorithms like quicksort.
