dBµV to Volt Converter
Gives the voltage behind a dBµV level, in microvolts and in volts.

How it is calculated
A level in dBµV is a voltage compared with a reference of 1 microvolt. The conversion is V(µV) = 10(dBµV / 20), using 20 rather than 10 in the exponent because voltage is an amplitude, not a power. Dividing by 1,000,000 gives volts. The microvolt result is shown with two decimals, and the volts are given in scientific notation with four decimals of mantissa (for example 2.2387e-4 means 2.2387 × 10−4 V). Any number is accepted, including negative levels, which give less than 1 µV: −20 dBµV is 0.10 µV. Every +20 dB multiplies the voltage by 10, and every +6 dB roughly doubles it. The tool does not know the load impedance, so it cannot give power.
Worked example
A spectrum analyser reads 47 dBµV. Divide by 20: 47 / 20 = 2.35. Raise 10 to that power: 102.35 = 223.87 µV. In volts: 223.87 / 1,000,000 = 2.2387e-4 V, that is 0.00022387 V. As a check, 60 dBµV would be exactly 1,000 µV (1 mV), and 47 dBµV sits 13 dB below that, a factor of about 4.5 smaller.
Common mistakes
- Using 10 instead of 20 in the exponent, which is the power-ratio formula. For voltage levels it is
10(dB/20), and using 10 would give the square of the correct value. - Mixing up dBµV with dBmV or dBV. The references differ (1 µV, 1 mV, 1 V), so the same number means very different voltages.
- Reading the volts output as 2.2387 volts. The e-4 means ×10−4, so the value is 0.00022387 V.
- Adding or averaging dBµV readings as if they were volts. Convert to volts first or add gains in dB; levels from separate sources do not add arithmetically.
- Expecting a power in watts or dBm. Without the load impedance (for example 50 Ω or 75 Ω) the tool only gives voltage.
About this calculator
dBµV (decibel-microvolt) is a logarithmic voltage scale referenced to 1 microvolt, defined as dBµV = 20 × log₁₀(V / 1µV), which rearranges to V = 1µV × 10^(dBµV/20). Working in decibels lets engineers express an enormous dynamic range — from a barely-detectable microvolt signal to a strong volt-level one — as manageable numbers, and lets them add or subtract gain/loss stages arithmetically instead of multiplying voltage ratios.
RF and broadcast engineers use dBµV constantly to specify antenna signal strength, TV and FM field-strength measurements, and receiver sensitivity thresholds, since spectrum analyzers and EMC test equipment typically read out signal levels directly in dBµV rather than volts.
