Cubits to Centimetres Converter
Enter a value in cubits to convert it to centimetres, inches.
Result
How it is calculated
The converter treats one cubit as exactly 18 inches, i.e. 45.72 cm, the common (short) cubit. The formula is cm = cubits × 45.72 and in = cubits × 18, where cubits is the length you type in and the results are in centimetres and inches. Both results are rounded to two decimals, and a value of 0 or a negative value is calculated the same way (negative lengths simply stay negative). A comma-separated decimal such as 1,5 is not accepted, so use a decimal point. Remember that ancient cubits were not all the same length: if your source uses a longer royal cubit, the converted figures here will come out too small.
Worked example
Suppose a text gives a length of 300 cubits and you want it in modern units. Centimetres: 300 × 45.72 = 13,716 cm, shown as 13,716.00 cm. Inches: 300 × 18 = 5,400, shown as 5,400.00 in. Dividing 13,716 cm by 100 gives about 137 metres, so the same length can be stated in whichever unit suits your purpose.
Common mistakes
- Assuming every cubit equals 45.72 cm. The tool uses the 18-inch common cubit; a source based on a longer royal cubit needs a different factor.
- Typing a decimal comma (1,5). Only the decimal point is read, so the input is rejected rather than interpreted.
- Reading the centimetre result as metres. 13,716.00 cm is about 137 m, so divide by 100 for metres.
- Mixing up the two result lines: the first is in centimetres, the second in inches, not feet.
About this calculator
The cubit is one of the oldest units of length, based on the distance from the elbow to the tip of the middle finger, and its exact value varied by civilization: the common (short) cubit was about 45.7 cm (18 inches), while the Egyptian royal cubit, used to build the pyramids and measured on cubit-rods, was standardized at about 52.4 cm — a difference significant enough that Biblical and ancient-history measurements (like the dimensions of Noah's Ark or Solomon's Temple) are given as ranges depending on which cubit is assumed.
Historians, archaeologists, and biblical scholars convert cubits to centimetres to translate ancient architectural and textual measurements into a scale modern readers can actually visualize, since no cubit has been a live working unit for well over a thousand years.
