cm to Feet & Inches Converter

Your length in whole feet and inches, plus the total in inches.

Result

5 ft 8.90 in
68.90 in

How it is calculated

The tool uses the exact definition 1 inch = 2.54 cm. Total inches are in = cm ÷ 2.54, rounded to two decimals first. Whole feet are ft = ⌊in ÷ 12⌋ (rounded down), and the leftover inches are in − 12 × ft. It shows both the feet-and-inches form and the total in inches, each with two decimals for the inches. Because the rounding happens before the split, a length just under a full foot carries over properly: 182.87 cm shows 6 ft 0.00 in, not 5 ft 12.00 in. Negative lengths and absurdly large ones (above 1012 cm) return nothing; zero is allowed.

Worked example

Convert a height of 175 cm. Total inches: 175 ÷ 2.54 = 68.8976, shown as 68.90 in. Whole feet: 68.90 ÷ 12 = 5.74, rounded down to 5. Remaining inches: 68.90 − 5 × 12 = 8.90. The result is 5 ft 8.90 in, or about 5 ft 9 in if you round to whole inches.

Common mistakes

  • Dividing by 30.48 and reading the decimal as inches. 1.75 m is 5.74 ft, which is not 5 ft 74 in; the part after the point must be multiplied by 12.
  • Entering metres or millimetres. The tool expects centimetres, so 1.75 gives about 0 ft 0.69 in; type 175.
  • Rounding the inches part first and then adding. Round only at the end, since 8.90 in and 9 in differ by about 0.25 cm.
  • Typing a minus sign or a value with stray characters and expecting a result. A negative length shows nothing, because a height or distance cannot be below zero.

About this calculator

Converting centimetres to feet and inches uses the exact definition 1 inch = 2.54 cm (so 1 foot = 30.48 cm): dividing the total centimetres by 2.54 gives total inches, which is then split into whole feet (÷12) and the remaining inches.

This conversion comes up constantly for people moving between metric and imperial-using countries — reporting height on a US visa or dating profile, checking if you clear a doorway or ceiling measured in feet, or reading furniture and room dimensions listed in the other system — since human height in particular is almost universally discussed in feet and inches in the US and UK but in centimetres nearly everywhere else.
