Centipoise to Pascal-Second Converter
Enter a viscosity in centipoise to convert to pascal-seconds.
Result
How it is calculated
Both units measure dynamic viscosity, and the conversion is a fixed multiplication: Pa·s = cP × 0.001 and poise = cP × 0.01. One centipoise equals one millipascal-second (1 cP = 1 mPa·s), so the number stays the same if you read it in mPa·s. Both results are shown with four decimals, so a viscosity below 0.05 cP gives 0.0000 Pa·s even though it is not zero. A negative entry returns no result, because a real viscosity cannot be negative; zero is accepted. Only dynamic viscosity is converted: kinematic viscosity (centistokes, mm²/s) also depends on the fluid density and must not be entered here.
Worked example
A syrup is listed with a viscosity of 350 cP. In pascal-seconds: 350 × 0.001 = 0.3500 Pa·s. In poise: 350 × 0.01 = 3.5000 P. In millipascal-seconds the same value is simply 350 mPa·s, so the three numbers differ only by powers of ten.
Common mistakes
- Entering kinematic viscosity (centistokes) as centipoise. They are different quantities, and converting between them needs the fluid's density.
- Dividing instead of multiplying: converting cP to Pa·s makes the number 1000 times smaller, not larger.
- Mixing up poise and centipoise. 1 poise is 100 cP, so a datasheet value given in P must be multiplied by 100 before you enter it here.
- Reading a viscosity measured at one temperature as if it held at another. Viscosity changes strongly with temperature, so keep the test temperature with the number.
- Using one value for a fluid whose viscosity depends on shear rate (paints, polymers); the reading holds only for the conditions it was measured under.
About this calculator
Viscosity measures a fluid's resistance to flow, and the centipoise (cP) is the traditional CGS unit for it, while the pascal-second (Pa·s) is the SI unit; the relationship is exact and simple: 1 cP = 0.001 Pa·s = 1 mPa·s (and 1 cP = 0.01 poise). Water at 20°C sits right around 1 cP, which is why the unit is so intuitive as a reference point.
Chemical and process engineers, formulators of paints, coatings, and food products, and lubricant specialists convert between the two constantly, since older datasheets and viscometers often report centipoise while modern SI-based process calculations need pascal-seconds.
