Belt Size Calculator
Get the right belt size from your waist.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool takes your waist (or trouser size) in inches and adds 2 inches for the belt wrapping over the waistband: belt = waist + 2. It then rounds that to a whole inch, with a half rounding up, because belts are sold in whole sizes. The centimetre figure is calculated from the rounded belt size, belt × 2.54, so the inch and centimetre results always agree. The waist is echoed back (33.5 shows as 33.50 in). Only waists from 15 to 120 inches give a result; anything outside that, such as 14 or 121, shows nothing. The field is in inches only, so a measurement in centimetres must be divided by 2.54 first. Brands and men's and women's sizing differ, so use the result as a starting point and check the brand's chart.
Worked example
Your waist measures 33.5 inches. Add 2 inches for the belt: 33.5 + 2 = 35.5. Belts come in whole inches and the half rounds up, so the belt size is 36 in. In centimetres that is 36 × 2.54 = 91.44, shown as 91 cm. A waist of 33.4 would give 35.4, which rounds down to a 35 in belt (89 cm). The tool also echoes your waist back as 33.50 in.
Common mistakes
- Entering a waist in centimetres. The field is inches, so 86 cm typed as is gives an 88 in belt; convert to about 34 in first.
- Entering the belt size you already own as the waist. The tool adds 2 inches, so a 36 in belt entered as the waist would suggest a 38 in belt.
- Measuring over thick clothing, or at the natural waist when you wear trousers on the hips. Measure where the belt will actually sit.
- Expecting the size to follow the exact decimal. The result is a whole inch, so 33.4 in gives 35 in while 33.5 in gives 36 in.
- Typing a waist below 15 or above 120 inches. Those inputs show no result, which usually means the wrong unit was used.
About this calculator
Belt sizing is based on your waist measurement, but with an important twist: belt size is typically measured 1-2 inches larger than pants waist size, since a belt needs to wrap around the outside of the waistband rather than sit at the exact same circumference as your pants size. Sizing conventions also differ slightly between brands and between men's and women's belts, which is why the same waist measurement can translate to different labeled sizes.
Shoppers use a belt size calculator when buying online without the ability to try a belt on, when converting between a known pants size and the belt size needed to match it, or when buying a belt as a gift and only having an approximate waist measurement to go on.
This calculator takes your waist measurement (or pants size) and returns the recommended belt size.
