Acres to Hectares Converter

Enter an area in acres to convert to hectares and square metres.

Result

5.0586 ha
50,585.71 m²

How it is calculated

The tool multiplies the number of acres by two factors: hectares = acres × 0.40468564 and m² = acres × 4046.8564. These are the international acre, which is exactly 4,046.8564224 m², and the hectare is 10,000 m², so the two factors differ by a factor of 10,000. Hectares are shown to four decimals and square metres to two. Any number is accepted, including decimals; the tool does not reject negative values, so only enter an area that makes sense. The US survey acre differs very slightly (by about two parts per million) from the international one, which only matters for large legal surveys.

Worked example

A farm is advertised as 12.5 acres. Hectares: 12.5 × 0.40468564 = 5.058570, which the tool rounds to 5.0586 ha. Square metres: 12.5 × 4,046.8564 = 50,585.71 m². As a check, 50,585.71 / 10,000 = 5.0586, the same area in hectares. So 12.5 acres is a little over 5 hectares.

Common mistakes

  • Dividing by 0.4047 instead of multiplying; acres to hectares always makes the number smaller, since one acre is less than half a hectare.
  • Confusing the hectare with the "are" (100 m²) or treating 1 ha as 1,000 m²; it is 10,000 m².
  • Using the rule of thumb "2.5 acres per hectare" for large areas, where the small rounding adds up.
  • Mixing up acres with square feet: one acre is 43,560 square feet, so convert square feet first before using this tool.

About this calculator

The acre, a unit rooted in medieval English plowing (originally the area a yoke of oxen could plough in a day), converts to the metric hectare at 1 acre = 0.404686 hectares (4,046.86 m²), since a hectare is defined simply as 10,000 square metres.

Land surveyors, real estate professionals and farmers move between the two constantly: the acre remains the standard land unit in the US, UK and much of the former British Empire, while hectares are the norm nearly everywhere else and in international agricultural statistics, so cross-border land deals, crop yield reports (tons per hectare) and farm size comparisons routinely need this conversion.
