Hectares to Square Kilometers Converter

Enter an area value and choose the conversion direction.

How it is calculated

The converter works in either direction, chosen with the direction setting. Hectares to square kilometres: km² = ha × 0.01. Square kilometres to hectares: ha = km² × 100. The relationship follows from 1 ha = 10,000 m² and 1 km² = 1,000,000 m², so a square kilometre holds exactly 100 hectares. Hectare results are rounded to two decimals and square-kilometre results to four, because the km² figures are usually small. Besides the converted value, the tool prints the rate used and the number you entered with its unit as a check. Any value other than the hectare-to-km² setting is treated as km² to hectares. The tool does not reject zero or negative numbers, but an area should not be negative.

Worked example

Convert 250 hectares to square kilometres. Choose the hectares to km² direction and multiply by 0.01: 250 × 0.01 = 2.5000 km². The check line repeats your input as 250.00 ha. Going the other way, 3.2 km² multiplied by 100 gives 320.00 ha. A quick sanity check: 100 ha is exactly 1 km², so 250 ha must be two and a half of those.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving the direction on hectares to km² when the number you typed is already in km², which shrinks the value by 100 instead of enlarging it.
  • Dividing by 1,000 or 10,000 from memory instead of 100; the factor between these two units is 100 because a hectare is a 100 m by 100 m square, not a kilometre fraction.
  • Typing square metres as if they were hectares; 1 ha is 10,000 m², and this tool does not accept m².
  • Reading the rate line as a rule for both directions; it shows only the factor of the direction you chose.
  • Expecting four decimals in a hectare result; hectares are shown with two decimals and square kilometres with four.

About this calculator

The hectare (10,000 m²) is the standard metric unit for measuring land area — farms, forests, parks, and administrative districts — while the square kilometer (1,000,000 m²) is used for larger regions like cities, watersheds, and countries. The two are related by a simple factor of 100: 1 km² = 100 hectares. This calculator converts an area in either direction and also shows the reverse equivalent so you can sanity-check the result.

Farmers, land surveyors, foresters, and urban planners switch between these units constantly — a single field is naturally described in hectares, but when summing up a whole municipality's farmland or forest cover, square kilometers give a more manageable number. News reports on wildfire extent, deforestation, or national land area also commonly need converting between the two depending on the scale being discussed.
