How it is calculated
The tool first finds net earnings: net = income − expenses (never below zero). Self-employment tax is then charged on 92.35% of that net: SE tax = min(base, 192,300) × 12.4% + base × 2.9%, where base = net × 0.9235. This page is fixed to tax year 2027: the 12.4% Social Security part stops at the 2027 wage base of 192,300, while the 2.9% Medicare part applies to the whole base. Income tax is estimated as (net − SE tax ÷ 2) × bracket %, i.e. half of the SE tax is deducted first. Above $200,000 of SE earnings (the single-filer threshold; $250,000 married filing jointly, $125,000 married filing separately) the 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax applies: max(0, base − 200,000) × 0.9%, shown on its own line for a single filer. The set-aside is SE tax plus Additional Medicare Tax plus income tax, and the effective rate is that total divided by net earnings. All amounts are in US dollars, and the bracket is a single flat percentage you choose, so the standard deduction, credits, state tax and other income are not modelled. Other countries tax freelancers differently.
Worked example
Income 250,000, expenses 30,000, bracket 32%. Net = 220,000 and the SE base = 220,000 × 0.9235 = 203,170, which is above the 2027 wage base. Social Security is charged only up to the cap: 192,300 × 12.4% = 23,845.20; Medicare takes 203,170 × 2.9% = 5,891.93. SE tax = $29,737.13. Half of it, 14,868.57, is deducted: taxable = 205,131.44, and income tax at 32% = $65,642.06. The SE base is 3,170 above the $200,000 single-filer threshold, so the Additional Medicare Tax adds 3,170 × 0.9% = $28.53. Set-aside = $95,407.72, 43.37% of net earnings. Below the cap (say 68,000 net) every year gives the same SE tax; only earnings above the wage base change with the year.
Common mistakes
- Entering the bracket as a decimal (0.22) instead of a percentage (22). The field expects a value from 0 to 100, so 0.22 means 0.22% and the income tax almost vanishes.
- Typing revenue as income but forgetting expenses. Self-employment tax is charged on net earnings, so leaving expenses at zero overstates the set-aside.
- Entering your marginal bracket as if it applied to everything. The tool applies one flat rate to all net earnings, so a rate from the top of your bracket overestimates the tax on the lower slices.
- Treating the result as a full tax bill. State tax, the standard deduction, credits and income from a W-2 job are not included.
- Expecting a result for a loss. If expenses exceed income, net is zero and every figure shows $0.00.
- Using this page for another year. The wage base changes every January; for 2027 income use this page, for other years the matching year page.

About this calculator
US independent contractors who receive 1099 income don't have taxes withheld the way W-2 employees do, so they owe both the standard federal income tax on their earnings and self-employment tax — 15.3%, covering the employer and employee shares of Social Security and Medicare — calculated on 92.35% of net self-employment earnings after business expenses are deducted. Missing this second layer is one of the most common tax mistakes new freelancers make, since it applies on top of, not instead of, regular income tax.
This calculator takes your 1099 income, business expenses, and estimated tax bracket, and returns how much of your net earnings you should set aside to cover both the self-employment tax and the income tax portion. Freelancers, gig workers, and independent contractors managing quarterly estimated tax payments, along with accountants advising new self-employed clients use it to avoid an underpayment surprise when tax season arrives.
This page is fixed to tax year 2027: Social Security tax applies to the first $192,300 of net self-employment earnings (after the 92.35% factor), the base the Social Security Administration set for 2027. The main 1099 tax calculator always uses the current year's base.
