How it is calculated
The text is lower-cased, then each run of letters, digits and combining marks is taken as one word. A hyphen or apostrophe inside a word keeps it together, so well-known and cat's are one word each; curly apostrophes (’) and typographic hyphens are first turned into straight ones, so cat’s and cat's are the same word. A hyphen or quote at the start or end of a word is dropped, as are spaces and all other punctuation. The tool counts each distinct word and sorts by count, highest first, with ties in plain byte order (so ç or ö come after z). Each table line reads word — count, and the tool also gives total and unique word counts. Numbers count as words. On the Turkish page, capital I becomes ı and İ becomes i; on other pages I becomes i. Common words are not removed, plurals are not merged and nothing is stemmed. Text with no letters or digits gives no result.
Worked example
The text is a short Turkish sentence: Kedi sütü sever, köpek kemiği sever. Kedi uyur, köpek koşar. After lower-casing and splitting on spaces and punctuation there are 10 words in total. Counting gives kedi 2, köpek 2, sever 2, and kemiği, koşar, sütü and uyur once each, so 7 unique words. The table lists the three words with 2 occurrences first, then the four single ones in byte order, which puts sütü after koşar. Total words: 10; unique words: 7.
Common mistakes
- Expecting a hyphenated word to be counted as its parts.
well-knownis one entry, separate fromwellandknown, so searching for how oftenwellappears will miss it. - Expecting the table to be a keyword density figure without removing common words. Words like the and and will top the list, and the tool does not filter them.
- Treating singular and plural, or different verb forms, as the same word.
kediandkedilerare counted separately. - Assuming the total includes only words. Standalone numbers such as years are counted as words too.
- Pasting Turkish text on a non-Turkish page. There the capital I is lowered to i, so IŞIK and ışık are not merged; use the Turkish page for Turkish text.
About this calculator
A word frequency counter breaks a block of text into individual words, tallies how many times each one appears, and sorts the results from most to least frequent, giving a quick statistical fingerprint of the text's vocabulary and emphasis.
Writers and editors use this kind of analysis to spot overused words or repetitive phrasing before publishing, SEO practitioners use it to check keyword density on a page, researchers in linguistics and computational text analysis use word frequency as a basic input for tasks like building word clouds, comparing authorship style, or identifying the most salient terms in a corpus, and students use it to study vocabulary patterns in a piece of writing.
Paste any text into this calculator and it produces a ranked table showing each word alongside how many times it occurs.
