VIC Cipher (Straddling Checkerboard) Encoder
Enter plaintext and a key phrase to encode with a straddling checkerboard.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool performs only the first step of the VIC cipher, a straddling checkerboard substitution. Letters are turned into digits; there is no chain addition and no transposition, so it is an encoding demonstration, not secure encryption.
Board: the first 8 different letters of the key phrase get one-digit codes 0 to 7 in order. If the key phrase is empty it defaults to ATONESIR; if it has fewer than 8 different letters, the board is filled up from A to Z. The remaining alphabet letters follow in A to Z order and take two-digit codes: the first ten use the prefix 8 (80 to 89), the rest use the prefix 9 (90 and up). Only letters are encoded. Spaces, digits and punctuation are dropped, case is ignored, and a text with no letters returns nothing. The board and the number of digits produced are shown below the result.
Worked example
Encode ATTACK AT DAWN with the default key ATONESIR. The one-digit letters are A=0, T=1, O=2, N=3, E=4, S=5, I=6, R=7. The rest are two-digit: C=81, K=87, D=82, W=94.
Letter by letter: A 0, T 1, T 1, A 0, C 81, K 87, A 0, T 1, D 82, A 0, W 94, N 3. Joined together, the result is 0110818701820943, which is 16 digits long. Decoding reads the digits back: 8 or 9 means that digit and the next one together form a letter.
Common mistakes
- Believing the result is a full VIC cipher. It is a plain letter-for-digits substitution, so do not use it to protect anything that matters.
- Expecting numbers to be encoded. Digits in the plaintext are ignored, so a text such as 1234 returns nothing and 5 in a sentence simply disappears.
- Decoding the output with a board built from a different key phrase. The board changes with the first eight different letters, so the receiver needs the same key phrase.
- Splitting the digit string wrongly when decoding: a digit 8 or 9 always starts a two-digit code, every other digit is a letter on its own.
- Typing a key phrase with repeated letters and expecting each to count. Repeats are skipped, so SWEDISH gives the top row SWEDIHAB, not SWEDISH.
About this calculator
The straddling checkerboard is the substitution layer at the heart of the VIC cipher, a hand cipher used by Soviet spy Reino Häyhänen (codenamed VICTOR) in the 1950s and long considered one of the most complex pencil-and-paper ciphers ever broken by cryptanalysts. The checkerboard assigns single digits to a few high-frequency letters (traditionally E, T, A, O, N and a few others) and two-digit codes to the rest, which compresses the alphabet into a form suitable for further numeric manipulation. Here, the first eight distinct letters of your key phrase get the single digits (with no key phrase, ATONESIR is used), and all remaining letters get two-digit codes starting with 8 or 9.
The real VIC cipher does not stop at substitution: it further scrambles the digit stream with chain addition (a Fibonacci-like running sum, similar to a straddling one-time-pad effect) and a columnar transposition keyed by a memorized phrase, which is what made it resist Western cryptanalysis for years. This calculator implements only the checkerboard substitution step from your plaintext and key phrase, so it demonstrates the cipher’s building block without reproducing its full security.
