Sprint Acceleration Calculator
Measure how fast you accelerate from a stop.

How it is calculated
The tool assumes a standing start and constant acceleration. From distance = ½ × a × t² it solves for acceleration, and the speed at the end of the run is acceleration times time.
a = 2d ÷ t² and v = a × t = 2d ÷ t
d is the distance in metres, t the time in seconds, a the average acceleration in m/s² and v the final speed in m/s. Both inputs must be greater than zero. Both results are shown to 2 decimals. Real sprinters accelerate hard at first and less later, so the constant-acceleration model fits short splits (about 10 to 30 m) best and gives an unrealistically high final speed over long distances.
Worked example
An athlete covers 10 m from a standing start in 1.9 s. Square the time: 1.9² = 3.61. Acceleration: 2 × 10 ÷ 3.61 ≈ 5.54 m/s². Final speed: 2 × 10 ÷ 1.9 ≈ 10.53 m/s, about 37.9 km/h. So the average acceleration is 5.54 m/s², which is roughly 0.56 times gravity, and the speed at 10 m is 10.53 m/s.
Common mistakes
- Using a flying start or a rolling start time. The formula assumes the athlete starts from rest, so timing must begin from a standstill.
- Entering the time of the whole 100 m and expecting a realistic final speed. Over long distances the constant-acceleration model overestimates the speed at the end.
- Confusing average speed (d ÷ t) with final speed. Under this model the final speed is twice the average speed.
- Mixing units, for example distance in yards or time in hundredths of a second typed as 190.
- Comparing times from different timing methods. Hand timing starts earlier than electronic timing with a reaction-time start, which changes the acceleration noticeably over short distances.
About this calculator
Average acceleration from a standing start is calculated using the kinematic relationship distance = ½ × a × t², rearranged to solve for acceleration, with final speed then found from v = a × t — the same equations used to analyze any object accelerating uniformly from rest.
Track and field coaches, strength and conditioning staff, and sports scientists use sprint acceleration metrics from short-distance timed splits (such as 0 to 10m, 0 to 20m, or 0 to 30m sprints) to assess an athlete's explosive power and rate of force development, track training progress, and compare athletes across positions in sports like football, soccer, and sprinting itself, where the acceleration phase often determines race or play outcomes more than top-end speed.
From the distance covered and the time elapsed after a standing start, it reports your average acceleration and final speed.
