Slenderness Ratio Calculator
Find how slender a column is and how prone it is to buckling under load.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool first finds the effective length KL = K × L and then the slenderness ratio λ = KL ÷ r. K is the effective length factor that reflects how the ends of the column are held, L is the unsupported length in millimetres and r is the radius of gyration in millimetres, so λ has no unit. The second result is KL in millimetres. All three inputs must be above zero. K is not looked up from end conditions or limited to a range: you choose it, for example 0.5 for fixed-fixed, 0.7 for fixed-pinned, 1.0 for pinned-pinned and 2.0 for a free-standing cantilever. The tool does not classify the column as short or slender. It also does not compute r from the section, so r must come from your section tables or from √(I ÷ A).
Worked example
A steel column is 4200 mm long, held fixed at one end and pinned at the other, so K = 0.7. Its radius of gyration is 38.5 mm. Effective length: 0.7 × 4200 = 2,940.00 mm. Slenderness ratio: 2940 ÷ 38.5 = 76.36. The tool displays a slenderness ratio of 76.36 and an effective length of 2,940.00 mm. With K = 2.0 (a cantilever) the same column would give 218.18.
Common mistakes
- Mixing units, such as a length in metres with a radius of gyration in millimetres. L = 4.2 and r = 38.5 gives 0.08, which means nothing, because both must be in millimetres.
- Using the wrong radius of gyration. A section has a different r about each axis, and buckling is governed by the smaller one.
- Choosing K for the wrong end conditions. Going from pinned-pinned (1.0) to a cantilever (2.0) doubles the ratio.
- Using the full length of a braced column rather than the unsupported length between braces.
- Entering K as a number far outside the usual range. The tool takes any positive value, so a K of 50 returns a ratio of 5,454.55 with no warning.
About this calculator
A structural column’s slenderness ratio is λ = KL / r, where K is the effective length factor set by the column’s end conditions (0.5 for fixed-fixed, roughly 0.7 for fixed-pinned, 1.0 for pinned-pinned, and 2.0 for fixed-free cantilever columns), L is the unsupported length, and r is the radius of gyration, calculated as the square root of the moment of inertia divided by the cross-sectional area. The ratio comes directly out of Euler’s classical buckling theory, which shows that a column’s critical buckling load falls off with the square of its effective length.
Structural and civil engineers calculate slenderness ratio during column design to decide whether a member behaves as “short” (failing by material crushing, governed by codes like AISC 360 or ACI 318 through inelastic buckling formulas) or “slender” (failing by elastic Euler buckling well before the material’s crushing strength is reached), which changes which design equations and safety factors apply.
