Secret Santa Budget Calculator

Enter the total budget and participants to get the per-person budget.

Result

$31.25

How it is calculated

One division: per_person = total_budget ÷ participants. total_budget is the whole amount the group agrees to spend on gifts, and participants is the number of people who each buy one gift. In a Secret Santa draw every person buys exactly one present, so the per-person figure is also the limit for each gift. The participants number is cut to a whole number (8.9 is treated as 8), it must be at least 1, and the budget cannot be negative. The result is rounded to cents. The tool does not add wrapping, shipping or tax, and it does not reduce the budget for any person who sits out or for extra gifts such as a group present.

Worked example

An office agrees on a total of 250 for a gift exchange, with 8 people in the draw. Step 1: total budget = 250, participants = 8. Step 2: divide 250 ÷ 8 = 31.25. Step 3: the tool shows $31.25 per person. If two more colleagues join, the same total would give 250 ÷ 10 = 25.00 each, so the per-person limit has to be announced only once the final list is set.

Common mistakes

  • Dividing by the number of presents instead of the number of people, or counting yourself twice. In a standard draw, 8 people means 8 gifts.
  • Entering the amount each person wants to spend as the total. The first field is the overall group budget; typing 30 there with 8 people gives $3.75 each.
  • Entering a fraction of a person, such as a couple counted as 1.5. The tool drops the decimals (8.9 becomes 8), so use whole people.
  • Forgetting extras like tax, wrapping, postage for remote participants or a gift for the host. Subtract these from the total before entering it.
  • Fixing the budget before the list is final. Late joiners change the per-person cap, so confirm the headcount first.

About this calculator

A Secret Santa gift exchange works by dividing a group's total gift budget evenly across participants — per-person budget = total budget ÷ number of participants — so everyone buys and receives one gift within an agreed spending cap. Office groups, extended families, and friend circles typically set that per-person figure between $15 and $30 specifically to keep the exchange affordable and fair regardless of group size.

This calculator flips the usual planning question around: instead of guessing a per-person limit, an organizer enters the total amount the group wants to spend and the number of people drawing names, and gets the exact per-person cap to announce — useful for office holiday parties, school classes, and family gift swaps where the group size changes every year.
